RoadRunner Blocking Use of Kazaa
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/14/0237258

An anonymous reader submits: "You should know that RoadRunner is
quietly blocking the use of Kazaa in certain markets. Particularly in
Texas, they have some sort of port scanner in place which scans for
Kazaa activity and then disables use of that port, rendering the
program completely useless. Grokster, iMesh, and all other FastTrack
programs are similarly affected. Yet RoadRunner is not disclosing the
practice in any way. Not only that, I'm troubled by the possibility of
them arbitrarily choosing to block other programs in the future. If
this becomes more widespread, they will have many angry (and former)
customers." The poster provides these four links to forum postings with
    more information: [0]one; [1]two; [2]three; [3]four.

Moms Go Linux, And Other Windependence Winners
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/14/0052203

An anonymous reader writes "There's an entertaining article over at
DesktopLinux.com entitled [0]"Why Aren't All Our Moms Running Linux?",
one of the winners of their recent wIndependence Day [1]essay contest.
From the introduction: 'Why aren't all our moms running Linux? This is
a serious question, so don't laugh. I used to get phone calls about
once a week, on average; it's my mom, telling me that "my computer is
running out of virtual memory" or "my email keeps beeping at me" or "I
can't read this document" or (the best one) "my computer is *broken*."
I knew that, at the time, she was of course not running Linux. Then,
one day, listening to yet another complaint, it hit me. Why aren't all
our moms running Linux on their computers?" Maybe it's the cuddly
Penguin logo? ;-)" They're adding the winning entries to the site week
by week - I wonder how many are [2]from Slashdot readers.

Carp-Free Independent Music Labels
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/1246216

[0]robkill writes "The actions and intentions of the RIAA have been
under close scrutiny in the folk music community as well as Slashdot.
In addition to [1] Janis Ian's article previously featured [2]here on
Slashdot, guitarist [3] Harvey Reid has an [4] article on the
importance of internet radio for the independent music community.
Besides posting a number of good links, he has started a [5] signup
webpage for independent artists and music labels who are interested in
circumventing the CARP fee. Right now, it's only a mailing list for
Artists and Record Labels who want to see internet radio succeed. So if
you own the copyrights on some independent music, why not join the
list? For the rest of us, it's a good list of musicians to support."

More Attacks on Linux than Windows
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/1754232

[0]the special sauce writes "This [1]vnunet.com [2]article discusses
the trend of attacks this year as compared to last. Over all, according
to [3]mi2g, attacks are on the rise. However, though attacks on Linux
systems are up, attacks on Windows based systems have actually dropped
dramatically when compared to last year. If the trend continues, by the
end of the year, attacks on Linux systems may surpass attacks on
    Windows systems."

Apple Plugs Software Update Hole
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/148226

[0]hype7 writes "Apple's getting quick! Less than 5 days after the
recently reported [1]software update vulnerability was discovered,
Apple have [2]a patch plugging the hole. Apparently, packages now
presented via the Software Update mechanism are cryptographically
signed, and the new Software Update client 1.4.6 checks for a valid
signature before installing any new packages."

Top 10 Things Wrong With Linux, Today
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/1255210

An anonymous coward sends in this link to a list of the [0]top ten
things wrong with Linux today. He's noting things that are "wrong" not
with Linux per se, but with a user's experience with Linux; most of his
points actually have to do with KDE/X. The KDE 3 bug he's talking about
is a user-interface change in konqueror: form elements can be changed
by mousing-over them and turning the scroll wheel, which is very bad.
Hopefully the KDE guys will roll this change back to the previous
    behavior.

MPAA Goes After Its Customers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/1238204

[0]EyesWideOpen writes "The Motion Picture Association of America
(MPAA) is [1]issuing 'takedown' notices to ISP's to alert them that
customers are using their internet service to transmit or post
copyrighted movies. The ISP's in turn send a letter to the customers
threatening to disable their internet connection unless the offending
material is removed. The MPAA is using software that 'cruises
file-swapping networks like Gnutella to find copyrighted materials,
hunts down the IP address of the poster, then discovers which Internet
    service provider is being used.'"

Mac Users May Be Smarter
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/13/1227226

[0]micah_lanier writes "Thought I would point out an interesting story
from [1]news.com. It seems a [2]NetRatings Study concluded that those
owning Macs tend to be more experienced with the internet, as well as
educated better in general. However, this simply illustrates the fact
that Macs are generally bought by those with little trouble paying
higher prices, and therefore those who can more easily gain access to
higher education (and so on)." Then how do we explain all the people
with less education buying premium computers from Compaq and Dell? I
think it's just that people with bigger brains like better computers!

OpenBSD 3.0 Honeypot Whitepaper

details how he set up an OpenBSD 3.0 honeypot, watched it get cracked
and then analyzed it -- all within 28 hours. Fascinating stuff...this
is the first OpenBSD honeypot I've heard of."

Zaval File Search
http://software.linux.com/articles/view/1518/

Every time I turn around things are going faster and faster! But it
seems that the more files I collect on my network, the slower my file
searches become. Well, there's no reason to allow a slow search to
impede your progress, especailly when help is only a download away.
