Tech-Interview Riddles
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/23/1148247

An anonymous submitter writes "A computer engineering student at UC
Berkeley has made a comprehensive [0]archive of riddles from technical
interviews. Very challenging and loads of fun. Also useful for
    interview preparation."

A Rock Moves In Space
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/24/0022211

[0]theBrownfury writes: "The BBC is reporting here that a very large
[1]Earth collision course asteroid has been discovered. This asteroid,
NT7, was first observed on July 5th and current data suggests an impact
date of February 1st, 2019. NT7 is 2kms wide and on date of impact will
be approaching Earth at 28km/s. An asteroid of this size is large
enough to cause continent wide destruction. However astronomers are
still cautious in reporting this asteroid as the orbit of NT7 has not
been fully verified. Current data on NT7's orbit suggests it orbits the
Sun every 837 days and travels in a tilted orbit from about the
distance of Mars to just within the Earth's orbit." The BBC article's
headline (and accompanying illustration) are more alarming than the
story itself seems to warrant: this asteroid has been given a 0.06 on
the Palermo technical scale, which means it shouldn't bump getting run
over by a llama off your list of worries.

Slashback: Apache, DRM, Limbo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/22/1635216

Slashback tonight has an important correction about the role of the
Apache Foundation (none) vis a vis yesterday's ".NET for Apache" post.
Also, another view of the recent DRM (stacked) roundtable in
Washington, a review of Red Hat's new beta, and more. Anyone who has
successfully downloaded the new Mandrake beta want to comment on that?

The Open Source Cookbook?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/23/2153213

[0]InspectorPraline asks: "I'm currently working on a cookbook that is
intended to provide good food at a reasonable price - the kind of stuff
you'd make before sitting down for a long coding session, with the
occasional idea that would feed a LAN party. I've got some ideas I can
put down, but the book would be quite thin, so I thought I'd put the
call for submissions to Slashdot. I'm calling it 'The Open Source
Cookbook,' and I'd release it under the [1]GFDL, in PDF, ASCII text,
and Word formats. Of course, I'd take submissions as comments here or
via email. I'd 'publish' the book via the web once I got enough
submissions to make the book at least about 40-50 pages in length or 30
recipes (whichever comes last), and as submissions came in I'd update
the book. Anyway, I'm asking for submissions for the book, which could
be recipes for dinners, lunches, even drinks. Two webpages that will
serve as temporary homes for the project can be found [2]here and
[3]here, and those addresses list my email as well as some submission
guidelines. So, any ideas, folks?" Hey, if you ever wanted to share
your favorite dishes with geeks around the world, this might be the way
to do it. What great dishes have you prepared?

WebTV/MSNTV Virus Dials 911
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/23/2044250

[0]Semji Rkim writes: "Though not the first virus to direct modems at
911, ABC News is reporting a bug in WebTV (Now branded as MSNTV) units
which causes the infected unit to [1]hang-up and dial 911. The virus
spreads via email and Microsoft officials are looking into how it is
able to replicate and also control the modem. Affected users are
advised to delete the email and call Microsoft at 1-800-469-3288."

NVIDIA Cg Compiler Technology to be Open Source

[0]Jim Norton writes "[1]This announcement from nVidia states that
their Cg compiler technology for 3D applications will be Open Source
and available under a free, unrestrictive license. The ETA for this is
in August and [2]will be available here." The linked company release
says it will be under "a nonrestrictive, free license," but does not
    give further details. BSD?

ISO Could Withdraw JPEG Standard
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/23/1831243

McSpew writes "According to The Register, the [0]ISO is prepared to
withdraw JPEG as a standard if [1]Forgent Networks continues to assert
its [2]patent claims over JPEG's compression algorithm." I'm sure the
JPEG committee would still be [3]happy to hear of prior art.

UK Sets Open Source Procurement Policy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/23/165228

An anonymous submitter notes a story in the Register about the UK
[0]publishing their policy on the use of Open Source software. (Or skip
straight to the [1]policy itself.) The UK has been moving towards this
for a while, and while they don't rule out using proprietary code, the
policy definitely recognizes the benefits of OSS.

The Lava Lamp
http://software.linux.com/articles/view/1536/

A wacky Wednesday deserves a wacky program. Unfortunately, not everyone
gets to work in a fun, low stress environment. Some people aren't even
allowed to decide what they can place on their own desks. Hey man, I
    sympathize.
