USB KVMs Compared
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0333224

[0]EconolineCrush writes "KVM switches have always been a great way to
control multiple machines, and now they're coming with all sorts of
cool USB peripheral sharing and audio switching functionality. The Tech
Report has a compared [1]a couple of the newest KVM switches from
Belkin and IOGear that're worth a look if VNC just doesn't do it for

HP Backs Off DMCA Threat
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0156235

[0]Bruce Perens wrote with this interesting reversal: "News.com reports
[1]HP has backed off of [2]its DMCA threat." Which makes [3]SNOsoft's
official response thankfully beside the point now. Update: 08/02 05:37
GMT by [4]T: Declan McCullagh points out [5]this CNET story, which
includes words from HP, Snosoft, and Bruce Perens. Writes Declan: "HP
blames the snafu on... their lawyers!"

[0]Navisto writes: "[1]DEFCON X gathering has begun in Las Vegas
already as everyone begins to prepare for the start of Friday's event
at the [2]Alexis Park. The hacking convention is in its' 10th year and
this is said to be the largest yet. This year there are [3]dozens of
speeches happening ranging from wireless, .Net security all the way to
Mac OS X AppleScript security issues and hacks. Gathering in Las Vegas
brings all the hackers together. This year the official events of
Defcon include [4]DC Shoot, [5]Capture the Flag,[6]Hacker Jeopardy,
[7]Scavenger Hunt, and this year's first [8]WarDriving Contest. When
Live Streams are activated the information will be posted on defcon.org

know their site isn't cross-browser compatible. Not everyone uses IE

Starving Nation Turns Down Bioengineered Corn
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/01/0319209

The Washington Post has a story about [0]Zimbabwe turning down
shipments of genetically engineered corn, even though the country is
experiencing a severe drought and starvation. Zimbabwe is afraid some
of the corn will end up planted instead of eaten -- and growing
patented corn is a no-no, of course! If the corn is planted even once,
it may contaminate all future crops grown in those fields or any fields
nearby, leading to huge lawsuits - and then the fields are
contaminated, exacerbating the food shortage. So, starve or be
bankrupted, and Zimbabwe appears to be choosing, "starve". Tons of
ethical issues here, which have hardly been touched upon in the U.S.
    press.

Computers That Thrive in Salty, Humid Environments?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/01/176230

Ever seen one of today's garden variety computers running on sea-going
vessels? How about in other places where water, or salt water is a
large part of the environment? Today's Ask Slashdot deals with 3
questions surrounding the construction of computer systems that can
survive in such a harsh environment. What does it take to harden a PC
to survive in such a place, and how much more expensive will it cost to
make one? Are there other issues to worry about aside from the salt and
    the humidity?

TheKompany Releases DivX Software For Zaurus
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/01/1845239

An anonymous reader writes: "InfoSync has an article on [0]DivX for the
Zaurus. Finally, you can watch movies on the go!" Between this and
[1]theKompany's ogg player, the Zaurus looks cool. It's a little
chunkier perhaps, but another reader points out that Archos is now
taking pre-orders for its do-everything [2]Jukebox Multimedia device,
which might be another option for those seeking a portable anything
    box.

reports that [1]AT&T Broadband has [2]introduced a tiered pricing plan
