AT&T and Lucent got a history lesson Friday, agreeing to a [2]$300 million settlement related to claims that they used confusing billing statements to mislead consumers into paying lease charges for their home telephones, including the [3]timeless rotary Traditional, that totaled many times more than the actual value of the phones." "What are the odds," people ask, despite the fact that a "one-in-a-million miracle" will statistically occur 280 times a day in the U.S. These strange things happen all the time, but we hype them because they provide the spice in literature and the comfort of comprehension." A previous plan, the [1]Florida Overland eXpress (FOX), was [2] killed by governor Jeb Bush in 1998. The voters responded by passing a referendum to require the building of a "bullet train," starting by November 2003. The new [3] Florida High Speed Rail Authority is focusing first on the busy Miami-Orlando and Tampa-Orlando corridors, but eventually hopes to [4]serve the whole state. And they are seriously [5]considering maglev technology! If the Florida HSR system did use maglev, it would be the largest one in the world. (Right now, maglev is in use on test tracks in [6]Germany and [7]Japan, with a 30-kilometer system under construction in [8]Shanghai.) However, I like [9]this humorous proposal best: it takes the idea of a "bullet train" literally, using the [10]Jules Verne approach to propulsion." Maybe you've discovered a new energy source or weapon, or figured out how to factor large primes in seconds, or learned how to time travel back in time and affect the present. Being a nice guy, you decide to warn the world now and give everybody a few years to prepare before revealing the discovery. How can you absolutely encrypt or otherwise protect your discovery, but guarantee its revealing at a certain future date even if you and everybody you know is long gone? For example, could you bounce an electromagnetic signal describing the discovery off a celestial body several light-years away?" Freshmeat Time to Rethink Your Help Flag http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/519 It may come as a surprise to many of you, but sometimes, featuritis can be a good thing. Sure, you may only use 20% or even just 10% of the features, but, to quote Joel Spolsky, everybody uses a different 20%. Take 10 or 20 random people, and you'll get about 99%. You may happen to face the situation in which your program has gained more commandline arguments than GNU ls. How should you deal with the --help switch? BitlBee 0.7 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93486/ BitlBee emulates an IRC server. Everything that is said on this server is forwarded to users on the MSN/ICQ/Jabber networks, and responses are returned as well. Blackbox 0.65.0beta5 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93512/ Blackbox is yet another addition to the list of window managers for X. It is written in C++, sharing no common code with any other window manager (even though the graphics implementation is similar to that of WindowMaker). It features small code size, a fast interface with simple menus, multiple workspaces, decorated windows, built-in graphics code to render solids, gradients, and bevels on the fly, and more. BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.131 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93504/ Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems. It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking. Botan 0.9.1 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93496/ Botan (formerly OpenCL) is a library of cryptographic algorithms, written in C++. It currently includes a wide selection of block and stream ciphers, public key algorithms, hash functions, and message authentication codes, plus a high level filter-based interface. CandyGirls 0.1 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93500/ CandyGirls is a theme for little girls or anyone who loves its color combination. It is based on Tigerts PrettyOkayish theme and uses the thinice and redmond engines. flc 1.0.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93515/ flc lists information about files (in the current directory by default). It shows the FILE_ID.DIZ of every file (if present). This is very useful for FTP admins or people who have a lot to do with FILE_ID.DIZ. FutureSplash 0.1 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93498/ FutureSplash is a semi-stylish, semi-funky theme based on the Tigerts PrettyOkayish theme. It requires the thinice and redmond engines. Gambas 0.37 (Development) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93503/ Gambas is a graphical development environment based on a Basic interpreter, like Visual Basic. It uses the Qt toolkit, but is able to use any other toolkit that a module is written for. GNU TeXmacs 1.0.0.13 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93497/ GNU TeXmacs is a free scientific text editor, which was inspired by both TeX and GNU Emacs. The editor allows you to write structured documents via a "wysiwyg" and user friendly interface. The program implements high quality typesetting algorithms and TeX fonts. It is also possible to use TeXmacs as an interface to computer algebra systems. Finally, TeXmacs supports the Guile/Scheme extension language, which makes it possible to adapt the user interface to specific needs, and even to extend the editor. gSpinner 2.0 (Development) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93487/ gSpinner is a horrible hack that uses trplayer, RealPlayer 7 and up, and wget to simulate the interface of Spinner Lite, a Web-based interface to the Spinner.com Internet "radio" service. It is an attempt to save screen real estate and provide users with an alternative to running Netscape for the task. GtkGLExt 0.5.0 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93488/ GtkGLExt is an OpenGL extension to GTK 2.0 or later. It has low-level OpenGL related objects with GLX like interface, and high-level gtk_widget API add-ons which extends any GTK+ widget to an OpenGL-capable widget. gtkglextmm 0.5.0 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93489/ gtkglextmm is C++ wrapper for GtkGLExt, an OpenGL extension to GTK. JStateMachine RC1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93499/ The JStateMachine aims to allow user interface designers or developers to design and control a UI using a UML statechart. The project currently supports both Swing and servlet/JSP UIs, as well as exception handling, access control, and I18N. LibOFX 0.30 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93493/ LibOFX is a generic library to allow financial software to easily support the Open Financial eXchange specification. Two utilities are currently included with LibOFX: ofxdump and ofxtoqif. ofxdump writes to stdout, in human readable form, everything the library understands about a particular OFX response file. ofxtoqif is an OFX response to the QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) file converter. Much OFX information is lost since the QIF file format is very primitive, but ofx2qif should allow importation of bank statements in any software that support QIF until said software supports the library directly. LibOFX was implemented from the full OFX 1.6 spec and comes with a developers manual. Marbles 1.0.5 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93495/ Marbles is very similiar to Atomix and was heavily inspired by it. The goal is to create a more or less complex figure out of single marbles within a time limit to reach the next level. Sounds easy? Well, there is a problem: If a marble starts to move, it will not stop until it hits a wall or marble. Teleports, arrows, and crumbling walls make it even more interesting. Mutella 4.0.1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93505/ Mutella supports all the functionality required to participate as a full-featured node in the Gnutella network (which implies support for file search, download, and sharing). It is optimized for a high-bandwidth connection where it sets standards for the server performance and stability, but it can also run on a modest-speed line. It features real multiple search support, passive search (all query-reply packets are checked against local search list), automatic re-submission of the queries, unlimited download retry, automatic search for alternative locations when download fails to start immediately, auto-get function for broken downloads, and much more. Nitro Technologies Memory Checker 1.1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93437/ Nitro Technologies Memory Checker makes tracking down memory leaks in C programs simple. It wraps strdup/malloc/free and tracks memory usage, allowing a report containing information on all allocated memory (and what function allocated it, which line, which file, etc.) at any time during the running of your program. Pam_mount 0.3.6 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93501/ The pam_mount module allows users to have NCP (Netware), SMB (Windows/Samba), or loopback-encrypted volumes mounted upon login, using the same passwords they typed to log in. A remote volume can even be used as a user's $HOME. Volumes mounted this way are automatically unmounted on logout. Pyzor 0.3.1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93492/ Pyzor is a collaborative, networked system to detect and block spam using identifying digests of messages. The Community OpenORB 1.3.0 beta2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93506/ The Community OpenORB is a fork of OpenORB that tries to make the evolution of the OpenORB CORBA project more transparent and allow the community to take part in making decisions about its future. Vstr string library 0.9.10 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93490/ Vstr is a string library designed for network communication, but applicable in a number of other areas. It works on the idea of separate nodes of information, and works on the length/ptr model and not the termination model a la "C strings". It can also do automatic referencing for mmap() areas of memory, and includes a portable version of a printf-like function. Web Noticias 0.5 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93502/ Web Noticias is a series of small PHP scripts that put your latest news in a Web page. It's very easy to install and administer through its Web interface. ypserv 2.5 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93494/ The Network Information Service (NIS) provides a simple network lookup service consisting of databases and processes. It was formerly known as Sun Yellow Pages (YP). The functionality of the two remains the same, only the name has changed. Its purpose is to provide information, that has to be known throughout the network, to all machines on the network. Slashcode Theme addition 'include_theme' http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/09/0650236 In CVS there is a new addition to the THEME file syntax. You can now choose to add an included theme. This allows you too easily create a theme with just your changed templates (yet still pick up fixes to the templates you don't customize). If you base your site off of the "slashcode" theme just add to your theme file: include_theme=slashcode If this is for a site that already exists make sure you add this information to the site_info table. Invalid command 'PerlHandler' http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/07/2319210 Hi all, I come already the two days trying to install the Slash in two machines with Mandrake.. I followed all the steps of the installation manual, however I have received, when initiating the apache with the INCLUDE of slash.conf this error: ---- Syntax error on line 6 of /etc/httpd/conf/slash.conf: Invalid command 'PerlHandler', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration. -- I'm checked lists and installed File-Spec with: "install RBS/File-Spec-0.82.tar.gz"... Without this configuration Apache works fine! Help me please! Image and File Uploads? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/06/0531259 Is/will there be a plugin to allow slash to be able to upload files and images? Something like what Moveabletype has? Slashcode login hangs http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/05/199233 Have the lastest Slash codebase running. However, when a user attempts to log in with a correct password, the page just sits there--the IE icon twirls mysteriously, as if connection was being made, but no return. Conversely, if the enter a valid username, but invalid password, the page return is immediate, with a message that either the username or password was incorrect. Any assistance...etc. --Hieronymous Coward Install Slash For Dummies - failing on final step http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/04/0626227 I was successful with every step of the "Install Slash For Dummies" instructions, but then failed on the final step when starting slash: [root@dedicated init.d]# ./slash start Starting slashd virtslash: ok PID = 28526 [root@dedicated init.d]# This account is currently not available. Does anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot? I've looked through the docs and can't find anything... Slash installation in one step? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/03/0750238 I think Slash installation is simple and clear, but also, it's manual. There must would be an automatic installation procedure. I'm thinking in a Perl script based on a response file or similar that installs Slash components (Apache, mod_perl, MySQL, Bundle::Slash and Slash itself) all in one step. Of course, you have previously to wite the responses to interactive questions that will be formulated during installation process. This response file may act as your 'Slash based settings for your site'. Also, the Perl script may write an 'installation log' during its execution. Could not determine the server's FQDN http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0514248 This is probably something stupid I did, but I can't figure out what it is. After installing Slash without error, I try to start Apache via "apachectl start" and I get the following error: "[alert] httpd: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName" I have a DNS server running and the FQDN I used in the slash install *does* resolve. All I get if I try to access the site is the default Apache test page. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks. SlashCode on Apache2+ModPerl 2 http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0513259 I have installed Apache 2.0.39 with ModPerl 1.99_04. Now I want to install slashcode on it, but libapreq-1.0 doesn't installs because, I think, libapreq need ModPerl 1.3.xx. Someone installed successfully SlashCode on apache2? How? Thanks a lot. Starting out: Bundle or Current Release? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/01/0511244 I'm interested in implementing slashcode but although I have a Unix background I'm new to the world of Linux and open source development. I noticed that Bundle-Slash is listed as version 2.13 (last updated last September),whereas slash 2.2.6 is current as of this month. My question is this: do I need to download and install the bundle first to provide some sort of base, or if I install the individual components (Apache, mod_perl, etc.) as directed can skip the bundle and just install 2.2.6? Thanks in advance. Slash DB ERD Please? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/07/31/0011217 Does anyone have an updated ERD of the Slash DB (preferably the MySQL version, but I'm not picky), from a working site? The one that comes with the docs not only makes very little sense visually, but doesn't match the tables created by the init scripts (some tables are missing from the script, others from the ERD). Any additional documentation on the DB structure for Slash would also be greatly appreciated.
