I'm hoping to generate some interest in homebrew vr: the gloves are cheap, and can be used for things like controlling midi synthesizers with the wave of your hand (a demo of which I've included on the [1]project page)." I know my 4 C's. I know I'm going to get screwed by the jeweller, but that's okay: after all, a diamond engagement ring is a time-honoured tradition... NOT. Having checked out the goods, looked for the flaws, I found the biggest one of all. Diamond engagement rings are the creation of a well orchestrated advertising campaign for most of the last century - according to this [0]article. Would you buy one for the love of your life? I know my girlfriend would love a diamond, but ethically I have my doubts. [1]Diseased-miners, child slave labour, cartel inflated prices... and as if that wasn't enough, diamonds have no resale value. Naddah. Zilch. They'll sell you the shit, but damn it, they're not taking it back at any price. So what have my fellow slashdotters done with regards to engagement rings? What's a good substitute for diamonds? My girlfriend understands my thoughts regarding diamonds, but deep down, I'm sure she would like a diamond. Even a small one." I've never even thought about questioning such a time honored tradition, but now I'm curious. Have any of you looked at the issues surrounding diamonds and found them wanting? What alternatives have you found and were they acceptable? Five years ago many publications saw a great future in 3D-Web, but somehow things just haven't been moving in that direction. Apparently, the status quo is not making companies in this field happy and so the big guys, including Intel, Macromedia, AutoDesk, EDS et al. [1]formed a 3D CAD working group. They claim that 'the need for a common 3D format becomes clear in a simple perusal of the Web, where the volume of 3D content is minuscule -- well under 1 percent.' Graphics technologies covered include the original 2-D buffer trick that made side-scrolling games on the PC feasible, as well as the more modern Raycasting and Binary Space Partition Tree techniques. It is programmed in C++, and with the OOB technique. empy 1.1.4 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93777/ empy (formerly Munch) is a system for embedding Python expressions and statements in template text (or any other unexecuted content); it takes source files, processes them, and produces output. These are done via expansions, which are snippets of Python code delimited by character sequences involving a special prefix (by default the at sign, '@'), and are substituted in the output with the return value (for expressions) or with any in-Python printing to stdout that takes place (for both expressions and statements). If the value of an evaluated expression is None, nothing is expanded (that is, it acts like the interactive Python interpreter). Textual data not explicitly delimited in this way is sent unaffected to the output file, allowing Python to be used in effect as a markup language. Explicit expansion, or inclusion of other files to be expanded, is possible. Also supported are m4-style diversions, where output can be systematically deferred and recalled. Erik's Partial Archive Collator 0.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93783/ Erik's Partial Archive Collator takes a directory as an argument, then walks through it looking for duplicate and partially duplicate files. If it finds exact duplicates, it deletes one and creates a hard link to the other, minimizing disk usage. If it finds a pair of files where the larger file contains the entire contents of the smaller file, it will prompts to combine them and create a hard link. gdpc 2.1.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93789/ gdpc is a tool for visualising the output files of a molecular dynamic simulation. It can be customized to read almost any input file format and animate it. It can also be configured to output images of each frame. IzPack 3.0.0 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93806/ IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it. It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will launch it. Linux Veejay 0.2.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93800/ Veejay is a video tracking tool for X Windows and the Linux console, which is similar in concept to FastTracker and ProTracker. It also features multi-user login, with CGI-based administration. slackports 0.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/93793/ slackports aims at creating a light BSD-like ports system for the Slackware GNU/linux system. SPOPS 0.64 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/93803/ SPOPS (Simple Perl Object Persistence w/ Security) is a robust and powerful Perl module that allows you to serialize objects. It is unique in that it also allows you to apply security to these objects using a fairly simple but powerful scheme of users and groups. Slash installation in one step? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/03/0750238 I think Slash installation is simple and clear, but also, it's manual. There must would be an automatic installation procedure. I'm thinking in a Perl script based on a response file or similar that installs Slash components (Apache, mod_perl, MySQL, Bundle::Slash and Slash itself) all in one step. Of course, you have previously to wite the responses to interactive questions that will be formulated during installation process. This response file may act as your 'Slash based settings for your site'. Also, the Perl script may write an 'installation log' during its execution. Could not determine the server's FQDN http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0514248 This is probably something stupid I did, but I can't figure out what it is. All I get if I try to access the site is the default Apache test page. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks. SlashCode on Apache2+ModPerl 2 http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0513259 I have installed Apache 2.0.39 with ModPerl 1.99_04. Now I want to install slashcode on it, but libapreq-1.0 doesn't installs because, I think, libapreq need ModPerl 1.3.xx. Someone installed successfully SlashCode on apache2? How? Thanks a lot. Starting out: Bundle or Current Release? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/01/0511244 I'm interested in implementing slashcode but although I have a Unix background I'm new to the world of Linux and open source development. I noticed that Bundle-Slash is listed as version 2.13 (last updated last September),whereas slash 2.2.6 is current as of this month. My question is this: do I need to download and install the bundle first to provide some sort of base, or if I install the individual components (Apache, mod_perl, etc.) as directed can skip the bundle and just install 2.2.6?
