With the current low economic trends in the software sector, the small software company I've been working for since I graduated is going out of business. Since it's so hard to get a job at another software company with so little experience, I'm considering the option of striking out on my own with a friend with similar development experience and creating a small software consulting company. Naturally, until we were profitable to the point that we could hire other people to work with us we would be both the programmers and the marketers/salesmen. The question is, Where should we start looking for business? How do we capture the hearts and confidence of potential customers when we don't have PhD's from MIT? Could those here with applicable experience on this subject share with the rest of us?" It is X11-compatible and capable of functioning as a stand-alone desktop environment or as an X client. Four GUIs are included, including Windows and Amiga interfaces that are accurate clones of their counterparts. Athene features a highly responsive interface, translucency and alpha blending effects, unicode support, and Windows/Linux compatibility. BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.136 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94086/ Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems. It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking. cipherfunk Patched Linux Kernels 2.4.19-fnk3 (2.4) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94114/ cipherfunk Patched Linux Kernels provide patchsets that focus on optimizations, bugfixes, and security enhancements to the current stable Linux Kernel. They are suitable for workstation or high-end server use in both production and development environments. dobackup.pl 4.21 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94101/ dobackup.pl is a flexible Perl script to handle unattended incremental backups of multiple servers. It handles multiple media sets with automatic media preparation and rotation, configurable 'what-to-backup', global per-host exclusion patterns, and user settable 'don't-back-this-up' metafiles. Its design goal is zero-maintenance, nothing to do except change the media when told. Gnome Run Program Utility 0.8 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94116/ gmrun provides a small window which lets you launch programs by typing their names. It features tab completion similar to bash or Emacs. It can complete program names from $PATH, or if the command starts with "/" it will complete file names. It provides a command history of configurable size, as well as the ability to perform forward/backward searches through the command history. gmrun was developed as a replacement for the Gnome Run program. gnububble 0.3 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94077/ gnububble is a theme based on bluebubble, but with an Aqua look. libdvbsi 0.1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94107/ libdvbsi is a library for controlling a DVB SI stream. Lua 5.0-alpha (Development) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94055/ Lua is a programming language originally designed for extending applications, but also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone language. Lua combines simple procedural syntax (similar to Pascal) with powerful data description constructs based on associative arrays and extensible semantics. Lua is dynamically typed, interpreted from bytecodes, and has automatic memory management, making it ideal for configuration, scripting, and rapid prototyping. Lua is implemented as a small library of C functions, written in ANSI C, and compiles unmodified in all known platforms. The implementation goals are simplicity, efficiency, portability, and low embedding cost. LUFS Userland Filesystem 0.5.1 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94119/ LUFS is a hybrid userspace filesystem framework supporting an indefinite number of filesystems (localfs, sshfs, ftpfs, httpfs, socketfs, freenetfs, and nutellafs) transparently for any application. It can be regarded as doing the same job as the VFS (virtual filesystem switch) in the kernel: it is a switch, distributing the filesystem calls to its supported filesystems. However, LUFS filesystems are implemented in userspace. This would be a drawback for local filesystems where the access speed is important, but proves to be a huge advantage for networked filesystems where the userland flexibility is most important. mdate 1.3.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94092/ Mdate is a freely-available mayan date utility. It calculates Mayan Long Counts, Julian Day Numbers, and dates of the Mayan Tzolkin and Haab calendars. MicroBlogger 1.4 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94105/ MicroBlogger, as the name implies, is a small, simple, flexible, secure, and reliable weblog engine written entirely in Bash. It is designed to be a deploy-in-place weblog solution, with absolutely no dependencies on any outside programs--no PHP, no SQL, no CGI, no JavaScript, no Perl, nothing. It is self-regulating, self-maintaining, and ready to fly straight out of the box. MySQL Database Server 3.23.52 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94102/ MySQL is a widely used and fast SQL database server. It is a client/server implementation that consists of a server daemon (mysqld) and many different client programs/libraries. namp 0.3.4 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94083/ namp is a GTK2 frontend for mplayer. It allows graphical configuration of mplayer options, and supports multiple players at the same time, quick play of movie clips, list management, and full-screen mode (even for virtual screens). New adventure shell 1.79.4 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94099/ The New Adventure Shell is a script that turns your shell into a text adventure game. OpenSSL 0.96g http://freshmeat.net/releases/94094/ The OpenSSL Project is a collaborative effort to develop a robust, commercial-grade, fully featured, and Open Source toolkit implementing the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) as well as a full-strength general-purpose cryptography library. patchutils 0.2.16 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94103/ Patchutils contains a collection of tools for manipulating patch files: interdiff, combinediff, filterdiff, fixcvsdiff, rediff, lsdiff, grepdiff, splitdiff, recountdiff, and unwrapdiff. You can use interdiff to create an incremental patch between two patches that are against a common source tree, and combinediff for creating a cumulative diff from two incremental patches. Filterdiff is for extracting or excluding patches from a patch set based on modified files matching shell wildcards. Lsdiff lists modified files in a patch. Rediff, recountdiff, and unwrapdiff correct hand-edited (or otherwise broken) patches. PHP Comment class 1.00 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94113/ PHP Comment Class is a simple, reusable comments engine which utilizes the PHP Table and Form classes. Backing into a MySQL database (or any other persistent store provided by Table or Form), it provides a set of Form and Table children which, when called, generate a comments engine with input validation and stylesheet support. PHP Slideshow 6.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94098/ PHPSlideShow is a little script that creates a web based slide show with NEXT and BACK buttons to navigate through a list of images. Setup is easy, just put the script into a directory containing your images. phpGuestbook 0.0.2 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94115/ phpGuestbook is a PHP3 application that allows you to easily include a guestbook into your Web site. Its features include field configuration, required field configuration, guestbook administration tools, and visibility modes for messages. PPWIZARD 02.228 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94095/ PPWIZARD is a powerful and easy-to-use HTML preprocessor. It includes external files much like SSI, but can do much more. It imports SQL, and is especially useful for automated Web site development, as well as for ensuring a common look and feel. It can expand existing functionality with conditional compilation, and with macros that support optional or manditory parameters. There are many add-ons available (thumbnail creation, photo album, extract flash info, linked-documentation with contents, and more). Quantum GIS 0.0.4 (Development) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94096/ Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for Linux/Unix. It will offer support for vector and raster formats. It currently supports spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS. Due to the complexity of creating a feature-rich GIS application, support for various data stores will be added in a phased approach. Ultimately, it will be able to read and edit shape files, display geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF), create map output, and support database tables. A plugin feature to dynamically add new functionality is planned. QuickTranslate Online 2.0 (Stable) http://freshmeat.net/releases/94091/ QuickTranslate is a tool for translating text in 16 languages using the Systranbox service, which is used by Google, Altavista, Lycos, Terra, AOL, and others. Six 0.2.6 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94112/ Six plays Hex, a game with very simple rules and deep tactical complexity. Two players, one with black and one with white pieces, alternate placing marks on a rhombic board of hexagonal cells. Black's goal is to connect the two opposite black sides of the board with black pieces. White's goal is to connect the white sides of the board with white pieces. TOSVCD 0.6 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94111/ tosvcd is a small C++ utility that can take one or more recorded VDR files and transcode them to one or more SVCD image files ready to burn with cdrdao. Uncle Unc 0.24 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94108/ Uncle Unc allows network admins and developers to keep track of many services on a network in a flexible extendable fashion from a single client program. The underlying protocol aims to be as generic as possible, and offers a clean usable model for interacting with many services. In Uncle Unc, client implementation is carefully separated from the core protocol, allowing clients to be implemented as GUI apps, Web front-ends, or console programs. Once adapted to Uncle Unc, a service becomes instantly accessible from any Unc-aware client. As new service implementations are developed, every client implementation is able to use them. The ever-expanding list of adapters currently covers filesystems, Java class libraries, relational databases, log-files and jini networks, and a feature-rich, fast desktop GUI client. WMBiff 0.4.7 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94104/ WMBiff is a dockapp which can display the status of up to 5 mailboxes. It supports mbox, maildir, POP3, APOP, IMAP and IMAPS mailboxes, as well as Licq history files. YAML For Ruby 0.39 http://freshmeat.net/releases/94093/ For Ruby developers, YAML is a natural fit for object serialization and general data storage, as their semantics are similiar. Theme addition 'include_theme' http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/09/0650236 In CVS there is a new addition to the THEME file syntax. You can now choose to add an included theme. This allows you too easily create a theme with just your changed templates (yet still pick up fixes to the templates you don't customize). Slash installation in one step? http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/03/0750238 I think Slash installation is simple and clear, but also, it's manual. There must would be an automatic installation procedure. I'm thinking in a Perl script based on a response file or similar that installs Slash components (Apache, mod_perl, MySQL, Bundle::Slash and Slash itself) all in one step. Of course, you have previously to wite the responses to interactive questions that will be formulated during installation process. This response file may act as your 'Slash based settings for your site'. Also, the Perl script may write an 'installation log' during its execution. Could not determine the server's FQDN http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/08/02/0514248 This is probably something stupid I did, but I can't figure out what it is. After installing Slash without error, I try to start Apache via "apachectl start" and I get the following error: "[alert] httpd: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName" I have a DNS server running and the FQDN I used in the slash install *does* resolve. All I get if I try to access the site is the default Apache test page. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.
