13.8MP Kodak Tops Previously Leaked Canon
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/24/0133236

[0]MadCow42 writes "With the professional imaging trade show
[1]Photokina opening this week in Koln Germany, digital camera
manufacturers are announcing a stunning new lineup of professional
digital cameras. These include a [2]13.8 megapixel monster from Kodak,
and a [3]11.1 megapixel camera from Canon. I'm sure Nikon isn't too far
behind, but no news yet on their offerings. These cameras are
positioned for the professional photographer, but with list prices from
under $4k to $6k, they're not out of reach for the 'pro-sumer' market
either. The best news is that new products like this will push prices
down on the 4-6MP cameras at the high end of the consumer level." We
mentioned the premature release [4]giving Canon's hand away; like
MadCow42, I want to see what Nikon has to say.

Purchase Your Personal Gene Map

dstone writes "Craig Venter, Time Magazine's Person of the Year in 2000
has a new hobby: collecting rich people's DNA. [0]Millionaires are

DRM: How To Boil A Frog
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/2345215

[0]symbolic writes "This [1]article on the Register explains their
experience with Creative's first attempt at supporting DRM, and also
reviews a sneaky little technique for 'easing' DRM into peoples' lives
via a free Costello preview CD. Two of the tracks are free from any
DRM, but for the two that are DRM-enabled, you have to activate the
right to listen to them (up to four times), by accessing a central
server via the net. For those in the know, the doublespeak used to
inform users of any actions they need to take to enable their DRM
rights might be quite amusing. To wit: 'The content you are accessing
requires an additional level of security. In order to play it, you will
need to update your Digital Rights Management Installation.' Others,
however, will think they're getting something, when they're actually
having something taken away from them. It's a matter of time to see if
consumers will flat-out reject this new 'enabling' technology, or let
it seep into and infect their lives like the disease that it is."

Graphics Memory Sizes Compared: How Much Is Enough?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1953204

[0]EconolineCrush writes "Trying to decide between whether or not to
get a 64MB graphics card, or spring for that 128MB version? Hit up
[1]this article, which explores the performance of ATI and NVIDIA-based
cards with 64 and 128MB of memory, before swiping your credit card. Not
so long ago 32MB was the top end for graphics memory on consumer video
cards, but now even budget cards are available with 128MB. 128MB might
seem excessive now, but a year from now 64MB cards might just be
    obsolete."

Snail Mail Still Winning The Bandwidth War
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1719234

LR_none writes "Today's [0]New York Times has [1]this short piece
suggesting snail mail is the leading broadband technology, at least for
video movies on demand. The article states that the 8 to 9 gigs of data
on a DVD would take two weeks to download at 56kb, making [2]Netflix'
three-day distribution by mail seem speedy. (Since they can send three
or more movies at once, Netflix compares favorably with DSL download
speeds, too.) The author estimates Netflix alone distributes 1,500
terabytes a day, which is impressive considering the Internet carries
2,000TB a day (by estimates cited in the article). The 'immediate
gratification' aspect of Internet consumerism has given a huge boost to
companies like [3]FedEx and [4]UPS, but it's surprising to think of
[5]the post office as being the leading infrastructure provider for
digital entertainment, in terms of market share and efficiency, for the
forseeable future. (Disclaimer: I don't work for Netflix or the post
    office.)"

IBM, MS Critique MySQL
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1652243

magellan writes "InfoWorld has an [0]article reporting how both IBM and
Microsoft are dissing MySQL. While it is understandable from Microsoft,
it is interesting that IBM, who often claims to be a defender of Open
Source Software, would be so negative. Sun Microsystems and Yahoo are
quoted as providing positive opinions on MySQL." On the credit site for
MySQL, though, Bingo Foo writes "[1]MySQL has finally answered its
detractors who complained about its lack of transactions. A [2]press

The Coming Time for 802.11a?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1516222

    [0]abhikhurana writes " [1]This article on [2]80211-planet.com predicts
a real boom in the market for 802.11a in the coming year. An excerpt
from the article: In tests in my SOHO LAN, I found that in real world
conditions, 802.11a averaged four times faster than 802.11b. In
addition, with its 5GHz frequency, 802.11a avoids the interference
slow-downs that b must suffer with microwave ovens, high-end wireless
phones, and other 802.11b networks. Also makes an interesting read for

uClinux is a set of patches for Linux that supports MMUless processors.
It brings a full featured operating system onto platforms that would
otherwise run less advanced, simpler operating systems. uClinux gives
the programmer a Linux API with remarkably few concessions to the lack
of MMU (Memory Management Unit), and in terms of code size and
efficiency it has an advantage over standard Linux.

Vobcopy 0.5.4
http://freshmeat.net/releases/97990/

Vobcopy copies DVD .vob files to harddisk, decrypting them on the way
(thanks to libdvdread) and merges them into 2 GB files (or larger) with
the name extracted from the DVD. It checks for enough free space on the
destination drive and compares the copied size to the size on DVD (in
case something went wrong during the copying).

displaying 3D data over the web via browserplugins. It has support for
animation, realtime interaction and multimedia (image, movie, sound).
Dune can read VRML97 files, display and let the user change the
scenegraph/fields, and load and store x3d (next generation VRML xml
format) files if configured to work with the nist.gov x3d translators.
It also has support for stereoscopic view via
    "quadbuffer"-capable stereo visuals.

development kernels for testing purposes only. These kernels provide a
service for developers and end users who can't be up-to-date with the
latest kernels/patches but want to test new kernel features. Patches
    may be added upon request.

Workrave 0.1.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/97971/

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of
repetitive strain injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to
take micro-pauses and rest breaks, and restricts you to your daily
limit. It currently runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows (using
    GTK/Win32).

Zabbix 1.0beta6 (Development)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/98006/

and trapping techniques are both supported. It has a simple, yet very
flexible notification mechanism, and a Web interface that allows quick
and easy administration. It can be used for logging, monitoring,
capacity planning, availability and performance measurement, and
providing the latest information to a helpdesk.

Slashcode
Slash moderatorlog table a black hole of mystery
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1650226

Does anyone have the lowdown on the sturcture of the moderatorlog
table? I assume this keeps track of individual moderations, etc. but
part of the structure puzzles me: uid - moderator uid val - ?? sid -
Story ID? (or discussion id?) ts - ?? cid - comment id cuid - uid of
the comment poster (??) reason - mod reason ("offtopic", etc.) active -
?? m2count - number of metamods on this mod? If anyone has some insight
into thie table structure, or can confirm or deny some of my guesses,
it would help me a lot. --dbworrier

AxKit and Slash
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/19/0531203

Has anyone tried running AxKit in the same mod_perl instance as Slash?
I just tried but get the following errors on startup. I wonder if
anyone could point me in the right direction for analysing this. What I
don't understand is why simply adding in another perl handler would
affect slash this way. httpd started Prototype mismatch: sub

Comment Color Coding Code Complete
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/18/0459236

I have just submitted a patch that allows for the color coding of
comments based on "freshness". Using a cookie set by article.pl and
read by comments.pl the template makes the color of the table cell
behind the comment subject one color if the comment was there the last
time the user viewed the page and another color if the comment is new
to that user. (note that this is being done on a site locked into
Nested view, so every comment is visible and in a table box). This was
not as easy as I thought it would be, and I would like to acknowledge
the efforts of the entire team of people I work with [
http://openflows.org ], as well important advice and help that was
provided by Jamie in #slash and members of the slashcode-general
mailing list. You can see the code in action at

Upcoming XHTML/Accessibility Slash theme
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/17/2237203

I'm working on a theme based on the slashcode theme from CVS. The main
goal with this theme is making Slash (more) accessible, usable and
comply with the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. This
includes: Make Slash valid XHTML 1.1 Control layout with a external
style-sheet ( should be valid Cascading Style Sheets, level 2 ) Remove
all tables that are used for design Use <th> tags in all tables
Add the <label> tag to all form labels use <h1>..<h6>
to add structure to pages, not to get larger fonts add <abbr> and
<acronym> tags where needed Remove light mode, since it won't be
needed anymore I hope that I can finish this and do a first release
real soon. This will also include a more complete list of changes.
Since many of the Slashcode.com users have their own Slash sites, it
would be interesting to hear if someone has some experience in making
Slash more accessible / usable that they are willing to share. Any
questions about the theme should be added as comment to this story
    and/or mailed directly to me.

Daylight Savings Time
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/10/1915232

I run a (relatively) large internal Slash site at my company. The user
base is pretty far flung, with people accessing and posting from the
western, central and eastern US timezones, as well as overseas
(BST/GMT). I did manage to get everyone to set up their timezones
appropriately once user accounts are created. The problem is long term
maintenance of these zones, as daylight savings time comes and goes.
How do other sites with geographically diverse readerships deal with
the DST problem? Is there a script I can run, or am I missing something
    here?

Machinists
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/09/0529215

Slash or other weblog on school server?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/08/0514220

I'm a college student building a site for a student organization. We
were given a directory on the server which allows cgi scripts and has
perl installed, but that is about it. No sql database. Not even cron
jobs can be run in this space. I want to use what I've got, which is
perl and the ability to write text files, and run a weblog with nice
looking threaded discussions and user info pages. From what I can tell,
Slash needs not only cgi and sql, but also several other parts of the
server which are even less likely to be provided on a school account.
Is there an easy way to adapt Slash to my tight constraints? If not,
can anyone recommend a good alternative? That is, a well-used,
well-tested blog application that uses text files instead of a backend
    database? Fingers are crossed.
