Life on Pluto?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/10/01/1826220

EccentricAnomaly writes "The BBC is [0]reporting that new models of icy
moons in the outer solar system predict that oceans (as in liquid water
oceans) may be much more common than previously thought. Even Pluto and
Neptune's moon Triton now appear to be good candidates for a liquid
ocean under their ice. This is exciting because life has been found on
Earth in environments similar to these icy oceans at [1]Antarctica's
    Lake Vostok."

Satellite Internet Service for Macs?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/10/01/2151246

Untimely Ripp'd asks: "Satellite broadband has been available to PC
users for half a decade, and still is not trivially available to Mac
users. It can be done, but it's always an unsupported hack, or it
requires buying expensive extra hardware and software. I cannot
understand why Hughes and the other providers would refuse to spend the
relatively few dollars necessary to develop a couple of device drivers
and glue libraries. Time after time, the vendors have said, 'it's
coming,' but it never does, and the promise eventually goes away.
(Earthlink's FAQ page no longer says that Mac software is being
developed, for example). I'm not gung-ho on conspiracy theories, but
the only explanation I can figure is that they're either being paid or
bullied. Does anyone know of any serious tech hurdle that would make it
cost more than $100K or so to develop the necessary software?" [0]this
article mentions one-way Mac service coming online from [1]OWC in a
future expansion, along with nationwide service. [2]A comment from that
story does mention a simple solution, but why is it that Satellite
service, even one way satellite service, depends on Windows-only
software? What other solutions have Mac users resorted to when they
    wanted their Macs connected?

Turn-key Mesh Routing Access Point
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/10/01/2220255

IPSection writes "[0]LocustWorld announces the release of MeshAP-05.
This is a test release of a bootable CD which turns a single board
computer or laptop into a mesh node and access point. Clients can sign
on to the network, cells communicate to form a robust, dynamic,

No More Mac Tweaking?

[0]netphilter writes "[1]Apple is trying to "[2]close the operating
system to tweakers" according to this story on [3]Wired. The addition
of the BSD kernel and the command line left me thinking that they were
trying to open the OS a bit more to tweakers, not close it. I'm not a
Mac user, but I have been thinking about trying out OS X. However, if
Apple is trying to CLOSE the OS (contrary to the impression that I had)

bash programmable completion 20021001
http://freshmeat.net/releases/98865/

Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and extend
its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines with
just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3
str [Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the
UNIX manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported
file-systems from the host called system, while make [Tab] would
complete on all targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to
produce programmable completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX
commands, reducing the amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need
to do on a daily basis.

Uml2Daml Converter 0.2 (Development)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/98882/

The Uml2Daml Converter is a GUI application for automated
transformation of UML 1.4 class-diagramms (in XMI 1.1) into DAML+OIL
ontologies. It is also possible to visualise the ontologies as directed
graphs. Since transformations are based on the XMI 1.1 standard,
DAML+OIL ontoligies can be modelled by using any UML tool which is able
to produce XMI 1.1/UML 1.4 compilant exports (such as TogetherJ 6.0).

Slashcode
Themes how to
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/01/1733226

I have just finished making the HTML templates for a new site and have
slash 2.2.5 up and running. How do I make and install these templates
as a theme ? How are template-tool, template check and install theme
involved in this process ? What is boilerplate ? thanks - Bob

Changing comment display?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/30/078259

I have noticed a surprising behavior in slashcoded sites. It seems like
a bug to me, but as a lay user I may be missing the Big Picture of why
one would want things this way. Specifically, I was surprised to find
that when changing the comment display parameters (e.g., threshold,
nesting, ordering) of a displayed article, the resulting page does not
display the original article; the comments are shown as requested, but
the initial paragraph is not drawn. I first noticed this switching to a
nested display on a recent Slashdot article, but some quick testing
revealed that the behavior is consistent across various sites and
browsers. Clearly, this is a systemic condition. Is this a deliberate
choice? Is there some reason to prefer this approach to one that allows
a user to display the entire article with the comments organized as
he/she chooses? From where I sit, I don't see why one would, but I was
interested to hear what the community thought before submitting a bug
    report/patch. What do you think?

Updating portald blocks
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/27/1928216

My site portald blocks have gone insane! When portald runs, the blocks
are actually updated - I check in backSlash, and the current content
comes up when I edit a block, say 'slashdot'. On the main page, the
block is still displaying content from the last time apache was
restarted. Everything else on the page is showing new content (stories,
recent topics, older stories, etc). What is going wrong??!

The Ethics of Weblogging
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/27/0322250

Okay, this is a bit different kind of question, but it's been
concerning me a lot lately. What is the "netiquette" of weblogging? For
example, I saw a cool story on Slashdot that points at a page on
Fortune magazine. The subject of the article is right on topic with the
Slash site I'm developing. Do I quote Slashdot, or Fortune, or both?
And in general, how ethical is it to create a site, the majority of
which is content that others have worked to create?

How to fetch a list of users?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/27/0322208

Hi All, I'm new to slash and have installed one. Now i got a simple
question as how to fetch a list of users from the users table? my
    @my_query = $slashdb->sqlSelect('nickname', 'users', 'uid!=1'); #
uid 1 = anon coward Now @my_query only results in the nickname of uid
2, but I need all the users' nickname listed. How to do that? Sure
other sqlSelect* give me some clues, but I kind of short on time,
despite of my new acquiantance with perl and slash. Thanks for all

Does Slash work on Lindows?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/25/167217

Has anyone successfully installed Slashcode on Lindows? Before I try it
for myself, I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions. Should I
use software available through Click-N-Run or download everything
    manually?

Slash moderatorlog table a black hole of mystery
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/23/1650226

Does anyone have the lowdown on the sturcture of the moderatorlog
table? I assume this keeps track of individual moderations, etc. but
part of the structure puzzles me: uid - moderator uid val - ?? sid -
Story ID? (or discussion id?) ts - ?? cid - comment id cuid - uid of
the comment poster (??) reason - mod reason ("offtopic", etc.) active -
?? m2count - number of metamods on this mod? If anyone has some insight
into thie table structure, or can confirm or deny some of my guesses,
it would help me a lot. --dbworrier

AxKit and Slash
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/09/19/0531203

Has anyone tried running AxKit in the same mod_perl instance as Slash?
I just tried but get the following errors on startup. I wonder if
anyone could point me in the right direction for analysing this. What I
don't understand is why simply adding in another perl handler would
affect slash this way. httpd started Prototype mismatch: sub
