Boston TV Signals Disrupting Police Radio in NJ
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/2325211

jeffy124 writes "WCVB, a digital TV station in Boston, is [0]disrupting
police radio communications in South Jersey. It seems that under
certain weather conditions, the signal reaches here travels 270 miles
(it's normally 50) and blacks out the police frequencies, making
communication between officers and from 911 call centers impossible.
The article seems to suggest that as more TV stations go digital, more
small-town police radio will be affected, as the digital signal is
significantly stronger than analog. Insert Joisey-joke here."

Installing/Configuring ALSA Sound Modules In Debian
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/1645231

[0]GonzoJohn writes "Linux Orbit explains how: "A very common question
that comes up when trying Debian GNU/Linux is how the heck do you get
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (a.k.a. ALSA) sound modules set up
properly? In this HOWTO we'll show you how to compile and install the
ALSA kernel modules, and then setup things using the ALSA Debian script
so that modules are automatically loaded and unloaded, and your mixer
levels are saved and restored on boot up. Here are some things you'll
need to have before you start this [1]HOWTO""

4th Annual NetHack Tournament
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/1328252

fatquack writes "The NetHack tournament season is upon us once again.
/dev/null's [0]Fourth Annual NetHack Tournament has just opened. As
with past years, the Tournament is open to anyone who'd like to play.
We're also open to anyone who'd like to volunteer to run a game server
since, though we have a T1 hosting the main game server, play can be
slow across the transoceanic links. [1]devnull.net is a loose
association of networking geeks, unincorporated and noncommercial. We
just do this for giggles; we make no money from this other than what
folks feel like donating. The prize structure going in, as we're always
open to suggestions to change this during the Tournament, is: Prizes
The "standard" prizes will go to: Highest Score 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Highest Score in each class The "additional" prizes will go to: Most
Ascensions Lowest Scored Ascension This year's Tournament will begin
with servers in California and Oregon, but with servers in Colorado,
The Netherlands and Australia hopefully coming online in the first few
    days."

Logitech Bluetooth Cordless Presenter Review
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/201245

[0]securitas writes "Many Bluetooth devices have (deservedly) received
dismal reviews and we were prepared for the phaser-like [1]Bluetooth
Logitech Cordless Presenter to be another toy headed for the trash-heap
of history. Instead we were surprised (some might say stunned :) ) at
how well it performed. The Presenter combines a laser pointer, an
electronic presentation remote control and a wireless optical mouse in

Microsoft Antitrust Judgement
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/2034207

judgement in the Microsoft case by CKK: [0]Final Decree, [1]Memorandum
Opinion, [2]Public Interest Order, [3]Opinion on the State Settlement,
[4]State Settlement Order." In brief: Kollar-Kotelly accepts the
settlement that the Federal Gov't and some states wanted, but she wants
a minor change to it; and she has decided the case which was pursued by
the other states as well, mostly ordering Microsoft to refrain from
certain behaviors with regard to the user-visible desktop. Overall: a
massive win for Microsoft, who can restrict the release of its APIs to
    major commercial companies only.

PicoGUI 0.42 (Development)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102104/

PicoGUI aims to be a complete GUI environment for handheld computers
and other embedded systems. It uses a client/server model, like the X
window system, but while an X server is given raw drawing commands, the
PicoGUI server integrates a widget set, making PicoGUI clients small
and efficient. PicoGUI also has the goal of allowing client/server
connections over a variety of mechanisms. It is most commonly used with
Linux, but is designed to be portable to any OS. PicoGUI has a variety
of video and input drivers which allow it to interface with the Linux
framebuffer device, SDL, the X window system, and several other
    devices.

Port Scan Attack Detector 1.0.0-pre1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102143/

Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a program written in Perl that is
designed to work with Linux firewalling code (iptables in the 2.4.x
kernels, and ipchains in the 2.2.x kernels) to detect port scans. It
features a set of highly configurable danger thresholds (with sensible
defaults provided), verbose alert messages that include the source,
destination, scanned port range, begin and end times, TCP flags and
corresponding nmap options (Linux 2.4.x kernels only), email alerting,
and automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic
configuration of ipchains/iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, for
the 2.4.x kernels psad incorporates many of the TCP signatures included
in Snort to detect highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs
(e.g. EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and
advanced port scans (syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against
    a machine via nmap.

SILVERRUN ModelSphere 2.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102043/

The SILVERRUN ModelSphere Java Designer Kit (formerly SILVERRUN-JD)
supports the creation of UML class diagrams. This UML tool has an
especially good interface to Java. You can elaborate your project's
static model graphically, and the application will generate the classes
for you to start programming. You can also automatically create your
diagrams by reverse-engineering Java source or compiled classes
(including archives). The JDK module has rich utility functions such as
a Java validation, accessor methods generation, and an XMI
import/export to exchange your models with other UML tools.

The Circle 0.34
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102099/

The Circle is a peer-to-peer application that provides file sharing,
instant messaging, and news services. Its novel feature is that while
it is fully decentralized, the method it uses to search for files and
people theoretically scales to millions or billions of users. Advanced
features include the ability to download a file from multiple sources
simulataneously, the ability to send messages to people who are not
currently online, and the ability to generate a customized news service
by specifying trusted sources of news.

portable Yaesu VR-120 receiver. It can read the memory image from the
radio, display the information graphically, and save it to a file.
Memory channels may be exported to or imported from a .CSV
    (comma-separated values) file.

uClinux 2.5.45-uc1 (2.5.x)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102093/

uClinux is a set of patches for Linux that supports MMUless processors.
It brings a full featured operating system onto platforms that would
otherwise run less advanced, simpler operating systems. uClinux gives
the programmer a Linux API with remarkably few concessions to the lack
of MMU (Memory Management Unit), and in terms of code size and
efficiency it has an advantage over standard Linux.

Slashcode
Slash plugins and version 2.3
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/0552241

I've been looking at a lot of modules (specifically email.pm and
Galleria), and it appears that they all require Slash version 2.3. Is
upgrading from 2.2.6 to one of the 2.3 versions dangerous? Is it as
simple as compiling and installing? Are there places to get these
plugins written for the release version of Slash? Or am I being a
    nincompoop?

How to Make Users Authors?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/200220

What is the proper way to turn users into authors? I'm interested in
this because I would like to use Slash as something my group uses to
communicate with each other and the world. I would like the people in
the group to function as the authors since it is their site. I've been
looking around in documentation and FAQs but can't find this documented
    anywhere.

SubnetID is masked using what?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/1959257

When Slash stores the SubnetID in the database, what Subnet mask is it
using? I was hoping to find this in the vars table, but no luck. Any
    ideas?

www.vorlonspace.org
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/29/2232226

It's still in development for other things, but vorlonspace.org is now
up and running (for the most part). Thanks to the guys on the irc
channel that helped me with some of the configuration issues I had.
This site is going to be a nexus of Babylon 5 information stemming from
the television show to the out of print customizable card game.

www.toborguru.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/28/037201

I have a new site up and running, not Much in the way of content but I
do have some information about one of my projects up at this point.
    Enjoy.

Code for Moderator Status Headline on Front Page?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/26/1952222

Slashdot is now running a very useful banner on the front page when the
user is a moderator: "You have X Moderator Points! Use 'em or lose
'em!". My users have been asking for something like this for weeks. Can
someone point me to the appropriate template mod please?

Comment Status "Read-only" means what, exa
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/1558218

There are 3 posible commentcodes defined in the default installation of
the code_param table: "Comments Enabled", "Comments Disabled", and
"Read Only". The first two options are fairly obvious, either allowing
or disallowing comments in the discussion (I presume). But what is the
"Read Only" option for? How does it differ from "Comments Disabled"?

Unable to start slashd?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/0723238

I have an up and running slash site ToborGuru.com I have been playing
with the templates and the general look and feel of the site and am
very happy with the capabilities of slashcode. However I have had a
couple of problems and I think I MAY know what is causing them now.
First off the index page is not displaying an "X comments" link in the
linkStory Template, and portald boxes are not updating/ being displayed
(they show up if they had content before (slashdot, slashcode) but they
have old stories, and the new ones are not getting any content at all
and are not being displayed). After reading some of the earlier
questions to this site and looking at it myself it SEEMS as though
slashd is not actually starting (would my site still run at all?). I
have no running slashd processes, and when I run "slashd start" by hand
this is the message I get: "DBIx::Password returned *nothing* for
virtual user start DSN (is the username correct?) at
    /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i586-linux/Sl ash/DB.pm line 46.".
I JUST tested DBIx::Password with the following results:
"##################Note!######################### If you are not on the
machine that will be using these passwords this will most likely fail.
Now, lets test getDriver() by itself Finding driver:mysql Now, lets see
if we can make create objects Trying: virtual_userFinding driver:mysql
ok 2" So everthing appears to be working correctly there. I have also
noticed that I do not have any slashd log entries for more than a
month, I installed slash JUST over a month ago, and am curious as to
what I may have broken since the site IS still working other than the
symptoms listed above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sections: Special cases
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/23/1640227

I've been poking about in the source for Slash, and I was wondering:
There are two sections that seem a little "special", the "index"
section which doesn't appear in the sections table, but is (I think)
used to represent the front page of the site, and the "All Sections"
section, which (I think) is meant to represent all the sections of the
site. Can anyone tell me how these two sections are treated as special
cases? How do they differ from other, "normal" sections, and which
parts of the site should care about these special values? If I set my
app variable "defaultsection" to empty (blank), does this mean the
defaultsection is "All Sections", since "All Sections" doesn't have a
    section name?

Installation: Apache seg faults on perl scripts
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/22/0711224

I've read many, many posts on google, etc. about this problem, but no
real solutions that have worked for me. I've downloaded the latest
apache, mod_perl and slashcode. I can install everything, but when I
try to access a perl script the browser sends a couple of requests, and
then I get a "Document contains no data error" and the general server
error log has child pid 3305 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I can
access the shtml files just fine and the slash daemon is running no
problem. Thank you for your help, Sean Forman
