W3C Releases Drafts For DOM L2 And More
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/0334248

TobiasSodergren writes "People at W3C seem to have had a busy Friday,

drafts ([0]Web Ontology Language (OWL) Guide, the QA Working group -

[3]Specification Guidelines) and 2 proposed recommendations:
[4]XML-Signature XPath Filter 2.0 and [5]HTML DOM 2. Does the this mean

playing around with HTML documents? Hope is the last thing to leave

Edgar Allan Poe, Cosmologist

[0]David Mazzotta writes "Bet you didn't know Edgar Allen Poe
pre-discovered the Big Bang and Black Holes. [1]This article at the NYT
discusses the concept of pre-discovery, or theorhetical anticipation of
eventual scientific discoveries. Most of these come from forward

More Fun Than You Can Shake A Stick At
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/0311213

BrokenPipe writes "When I was in Japan last summer I bought a
PlayStation 2 in anticipation of a game that was just released a couple
of weeks ago. It is only available in Japan and it will probably never
be released in the US. It is called "Taiko no Tatsujin". The game has
been in the arcades in Tokyo for a while but it has just been released
for the PlayStation 2. Apparently it is the [0]number 3 game in Japan
right now and many places are sold out. Luckily, mine arrived this past
Monday. So what is the hype all about? Well, the game is based on
Japanese traditional drums which are called 'taiko' drums. Basically,
you need to drum along with a song, hitting the drum at just the right
moment. Most of the songs are either Japanese pop songs (J-Pop) or more
traditional Japanese songs. It is a great game for all ages. The
[1]official website is here." For more information, here are several

PA ISP to Restrict P2P Uploads

Freshmeat
Maximum Linux Security
http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/599

Maximum Linux Security's author is clearly ignorant of cryptographer
Bruce Schneier's claim that "Security is a process, not a product." At
its best, this book is a catalogue of useful security tools. However,
very little context is provided for these tools. There is no discussion
of particular vulnerabilities and how they are exploited, of network
architecture and the difficulties inherent in TCP/IP networking, or of
    application-level problems.

Arch Revision Control System 1.0pre10
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102942/

Arch is a distributed revision control system that features distributed
databases, fancy merging, support for renaming, unobtrusive operation,
a Web interface, and revision libraries. It consists of a collection of
shell scripts and C code, and brings together many shell utilities,
    SSH, HTTP, diff, and patch.

Clock randomness gathering daemon 1.0.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102879/

The Clock randomness gathering daemon gathers system randomness from
fluctuations between different physical high-frequency clocks in a
system. The randomness is tested with FIPS, and if this is successful,
fed into the system entropy pool. It is especially useful for systems
without real hardware random number generators.

Firewall by Jim 1.30
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102950/

This is a firewall that takes advantage of tcp_wrappers information to
block users. It also uses separate files for configuration ease. It is
designed to work out of the box with eth0 for internet and eth1 for the
    LAN.

Fopps 0.12a
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102935/

FOPPS (Feature Oriented Product Planning System) is a tool that helps
you to design your software product line. It provides different views
such as a project plan and feature tree to help maintain your core
    assets and applications.

GnomeICU 0.99 beta
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102954/

GnomeICU is a Gnome application which allows one to communicate with
other GnomeICU users or others who use ICQ (Windows, Java, Mac, etc).
With GnomeICU, one can send and receive messages, change online modes,
send and receive URLs, and much more.

Grande 0.5
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102946/

Grande is a "ZANAC"-esque 2D scrolling shooting game. Enemies
must be attacked with a variety of weapons.

Hollywood Plus/DXR3 Linux Drivers 0.13.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102952/

The Hollywood Plus/DXR3 Linux Drivers provide kernel drivers for
MPEG/DVD decoders based on the em8300 chipset. This includes the DXR3
from Creative Labs and the Hollywood Plus from Sigma Designs.

libferris 0.9.50
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102953/

libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of all
kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each
datum to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as contexts and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include Native (kernel disk IO with event
updates using fam), xml (mount an xml file as a filesystem), edb (mount
a berkeley database), ffilter (mount an LDAP filter string) and mbox
(mount your mailbox). EA generators include image, audio, and animation
    decoders.

LiVES 0.2.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102951/

LiVES (the Linux Video Editing System) is intended to be a simple yet
powerful video effects and editing system. It will use commonly
available tools (mplayer, ImageMagick, and GTK+, and in the future
possibly gstreamer or xine), so it should work on most systems. It is
currently usable for small video files.

Tcpreplay 1.3-Beta5
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102955/

Tcpreplay is a set of Unix tools which allows the replaying of captured
network traffic (pcap or snoop format). It can be used to test a
variety of network devices including routers, firewalls, and NIDS.

Xchat_speak.pl 0.3.1
http://freshmeat.net/releases/102949/

xchat_speak is a small Perl script designed to be used with xchat to
act as a bridge between it and the Festival Speech Synthesis System.
Using it allows you to listen to IRC conversations rather than just
reading them. This turns out to be quite useful if you want to get on
    with something else while IRCing.

Slashcode
Show Domains: Explain, please.
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/057254

On the user comments options page, an option exists to "Show the links
domain only in recommended situations". What are the "recommended
situations", exactly? How does this differ from the option to "Always
    show link domains"?

Upgrading to MySQL 4?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/03/015232

In order to support some other projects I need to roll out on my
server, I need to upgrade to a real ACID database, which supports
transactions. Has anybody yet tried using Slash running on MySQL 4.0,
which now supports transactions? Are there any caevats or tricks to
doing the switchover, beyond the general upgrade notes for MySQL?

Slash plugins and version 2.3
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/0552241

I've been looking at a lot of modules (specifically email.pm and
Galleria), and it appears that they all require Slash version 2.3. Is
upgrading from 2.2.6 to one of the 2.3 versions dangerous? Is it as
simple as compiling and installing? Are there places to get these
plugins written for the release version of Slash? Or am I being a
    nincompoop?

How to Make Users Authors?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/200220

What is the proper way to turn users into authors? I'm interested in
this because I would like to use Slash as something my group uses to
communicate with each other and the world. I would like the people in
the group to function as the authors since it is their site. I've been
looking around in documentation and FAQs but can't find this documented
    anywhere.

SubnetID is masked using what?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/1959257

When Slash stores the SubnetID in the database, what Subnet mask is it
using? I was hoping to find this in the vars table, but no luck. Any
    ideas?

www.vorlonspace.org
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/29/2232226

It's still in development for other things, but vorlonspace.org is now
up and running (for the most part). Thanks to the guys on the irc
channel that helped me with some of the configuration issues I had.
This site is going to be a nexus of Babylon 5 information stemming from
the television show to the out of print customizable card game.

www.toborguru.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/28/037201

I have a new site up and running, not Much in the way of content but I
do have some information about one of my projects up at this point.
    Enjoy.

Code for Moderator Status Headline on Front Page?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/26/1952222

Slashdot is now running a very useful banner on the front page when the
user is a moderator: "You have X Moderator Points! Use 'em or lose
'em!". My users have been asking for something like this for weeks. Can
someone point me to the appropriate template mod please?

Comment Status "Read-only" means what, exa
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/1558218

There are 3 posible commentcodes defined in the default installation of
the code_param table: "Comments Enabled", "Comments Disabled", and
"Read Only". The first two options are fairly obvious, either allowing
or disallowing comments in the discussion (I presume). But what is the
"Read Only" option for? How does it differ from "Comments Disabled"?

Unable to start slashd?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/0723238

I have an up and running slash site ToborGuru.com I have been playing
with the templates and the general look and feel of the site and am
very happy with the capabilities of slashcode. However I have had a
couple of problems and I think I MAY know what is causing them now.
First off the index page is not displaying an "X comments" link in the
linkStory Template, and portald boxes are not updating/ being displayed
(they show up if they had content before (slashdot, slashcode) but they
have old stories, and the new ones are not getting any content at all
and are not being displayed). After reading some of the earlier
questions to this site and looking at it myself it SEEMS as though
slashd is not actually starting (would my site still run at all?). I
have no running slashd processes, and when I run "slashd start" by hand
this is the message I get: "DBIx::Password returned *nothing* for
virtual user start DSN (is the username correct?) at
    /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i586-linux/Sl ash/DB.pm line 46.".
I JUST tested DBIx::Password with the following results:
"##################Note!######################### If you are not on the
machine that will be using these passwords this will most likely fail.
Now, lets test getDriver() by itself Finding driver:mysql Now, lets see
if we can make create objects Trying: virtual_userFinding driver:mysql
ok 2" So everthing appears to be working correctly there. I have also
noticed that I do not have any slashd log entries for more than a
month, I installed slash JUST over a month ago, and am curious as to
what I may have broken since the site IS still working other than the
symptoms listed above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
