US Busts Military Network Hacker
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/12/0159203

    [0]yorgasor writes " [1]KATU has an [2]article announcing the case of a
mysterious hacker who has broken into roughly 100 military networks has
been solved. The hacker is a British citizen and authorities were
considering extradition for the case. Although no networks containing
classified information were compromised, they do consider the hacker to
be a professional rather than recreational due to the large number of
    networks he hacked."

Newton's "Principia" stolen
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/12/0013242

[0]Silverleaf writes "[1]O2 have a [2]story on the theft of Isaac
Newton's revolutionary "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica"
from a Russian museum. For the non-physicists among you, Newton first
published his famed three laws of motion and his law of universal
gravitation in "Principia" in 1687. I'm surprised this theft hasn't
attracted more attention in the mainstream media, since "Principia" is
generally considered the most important scientific works in history."

Secure Wireless Through Infrared Antennas
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/12/0031227

[0]oogamrm writes "Everyone knows the main problem with Wi-Fi:
Security. It's relatively easy for intruders to sniff packets out of
the air and even connect to the wireless net. While most wireless
companies have responded by trying to beef up the encryption, the
[1]University of Warwick's engineering department has developed an
optical antenna that operates in the infrared band. This means almost
no energy leaking through walls, and simple filters to block it from
exiting through windows. The antennas can be so well tuned that several
networks can be co-located in the same physical space. The whole story
    is available at [2]news.com.com."

Detecting 802.11 Discovery Apps
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/11/1915230

[0]Joshua Wright writes "I have written a [1]white paper on detecting
802.11 Wireless LAN Network Discovery applications. Wireless LAN
discovery through the use of applications such as NetStumbler,
DStumbler, Wellenreiter and others is an increasingly popular technique
for network penetration. The discovery of a wireless LAN might be used
for seemingly innocuous Internet access, or to be used as a "backdoor"
into a network to stage an attack. This paper reviews some of the
tactics used in wireless LAN network discovery and attempts to identify
some of the fingerprints left by wireless LAN discovery applications,
focusing on the MAC and LLC layers. This fingerprint information can
then be incorporated into intrusion detection tools capable of
    analyzing data-link layer traffic. "

Ideas for a Recording Industry Alternative?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/11/1035226

[0]icewalker asks: "There has been a lot of news ([1]here, [2]here, and
[3]here) lately about music, copy protection, and other related issues.
What I find interesting is that there are literally thousands of free
bands out there that are more than worthy of listening too. Free as in
they have not sold their souls (not to mention music rights) away to
the [4]devils of the music industry. But how does one get to [5]listen
to these pioneers of music? The solution could be sites like [6]mp3.com
(until the [7]mp3 royalties are forced). But what people want is a
locals only site that streams, guess what, the music from free local
bands only. Not just for your community but local bands from all over
the US (and the world). We need a [8]site that collects these bands and
we need a [9]streamer that plays them. No [10]CARP royalty problems
since these bands are unsigned and own the music themselves. Make it so
that the artists can [11]hopefully sell their own CD's or single songs
from the same site. Anyway, mix and bake at multiple bit rates and you
have a solution to the copy protected CD (I haven't bought one yet from
an Indie Band). The big guys go down because they can't compete with
free, better than great music on the web with a low cost distribution.
So, where is this utopia? Oh! And dump the necessary registration
required to listen (are you listening mp3.com?)."

Microsoft Responds to Leaked Memo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/11/1819239

    [0]AbbeyRoad writes "[1]CNN, has a [2] story on Microsoft's response
the [3] internal memo previous leaked: "Microsoft believes many of its
efforts to market its products against Linux and open source are
backfiring, according to a memo posted on the Internet. ... Microsoft
declined to comment on the authenticity of the memo, and did not answer
when asked if it believes its marketing against Linux and open source
has been effective. ... Microsoft spokesman Jon Murchinson said: ''The
document in question seems to suggest that the basis for evaluating
products has been long-term customer value, and that's something we
agree with. I think our marketing is geared toward that issue, toward

Microsoft Targeting Indian Developers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/11/185237

Pranjal writes "An Indian Business magazine, [0]Business World is
reporting that in it's war against Linux, Microsoft is taking the
battle to the Indian developers. The logic is simple. India has 10% of
the developer population of the world. If a significant number of these
developers commit to work on MS platforms then the number of developers
working on Linux platforms can decrease significantly and thus the
number of applications. As Dilip Mistry, a director at Microsoft
India's Bangalore office puts it, "This country can affect our
(Microsoft's) destiny." [Quote From article] Local linux user groups
are trying to counter this threat by targetting school and university
students and increasing the awareness about development on a linux
platform. Read the full story [1]here. [[2]Nice cover don't you
    think?]"

Slashcode
Show Domains: Explain, please.
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/057254

On the user comments options page, an option exists to "Show the links
domain only in recommended situations". What are the "recommended
situations", exactly? How does this differ from the option to "Always
    show link domains"?

Upgrading to MySQL 4?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/03/015232

In order to support some other projects I need to roll out on my
server, I need to upgrade to a real ACID database, which supports
transactions. Has anybody yet tried using Slash running on MySQL 4.0,
which now supports transactions? Are there any caevats or tricks to
doing the switchover, beyond the general upgrade notes for MySQL?

Slash plugins and version 2.3
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/0552241

I've been looking at a lot of modules (specifically email.pm and
Galleria), and it appears that they all require Slash version 2.3. Is
upgrading from 2.2.6 to one of the 2.3 versions dangerous? Is it as
simple as compiling and installing? Are there places to get these
plugins written for the release version of Slash? Or am I being a
    nincompoop?

How to Make Users Authors?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/200220

What is the proper way to turn users into authors? I'm interested in
this because I would like to use Slash as something my group uses to
communicate with each other and the world. I would like the people in
the group to function as the authors since it is their site. I've been
looking around in documentation and FAQs but can't find this documented
    anywhere.

SubnetID is masked using what?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/1959257

When Slash stores the SubnetID in the database, what Subnet mask is it
using? I was hoping to find this in the vars table, but no luck. Any
    ideas?

www.vorlonspace.org
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/29/2232226

It's still in development for other things, but vorlonspace.org is now
up and running (for the most part). Thanks to the guys on the irc
channel that helped me with some of the configuration issues I had.
This site is going to be a nexus of Babylon 5 information stemming from
the television show to the out of print customizable card game.

www.toborguru.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/28/037201

I have a new site up and running, not Much in the way of content but I
do have some information about one of my projects up at this point.
    Enjoy.

Code for Moderator Status Headline on Front Page?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/26/1952222

Slashdot is now running a very useful banner on the front page when the
user is a moderator: "You have X Moderator Points! Use 'em or lose
'em!". My users have been asking for something like this for weeks. Can
someone point me to the appropriate template mod please?

Comment Status "Read-only" means what, exa
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/1558218

There are 3 posible commentcodes defined in the default installation of
the code_param table: "Comments Enabled", "Comments Disabled", and
"Read Only". The first two options are fairly obvious, either allowing
or disallowing comments in the discussion (I presume). But what is the
"Read Only" option for? How does it differ from "Comments Disabled"?

Unable to start slashd?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/0723238

I have an up and running slash site ToborGuru.com I have been playing
with the templates and the general look and feel of the site and am
very happy with the capabilities of slashcode. However I have had a
couple of problems and I think I MAY know what is causing them now.
First off the index page is not displaying an "X comments" link in the
linkStory Template, and portald boxes are not updating/ being displayed
(they show up if they had content before (slashdot, slashcode) but they
have old stories, and the new ones are not getting any content at all
and are not being displayed). After reading some of the earlier
questions to this site and looking at it myself it SEEMS as though
slashd is not actually starting (would my site still run at all?). I
have no running slashd processes, and when I run "slashd start" by hand
this is the message I get: "DBIx::Password returned *nothing* for
virtual user start DSN (is the username correct?) at
    /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i586-linux/Sl ash/DB.pm line 46.".
I JUST tested DBIx::Password with the following results:
"##################Note!######################### If you are not on the
machine that will be using these passwords this will most likely fail.
Now, lets test getDriver() by itself Finding driver:mysql Now, lets see
if we can make create objects Trying: virtual_userFinding driver:mysql
ok 2" So everthing appears to be working correctly there. I have also
noticed that I do not have any slashd log entries for more than a
month, I installed slash JUST over a month ago, and am curious as to
what I may have broken since the site IS still working other than the
symptoms listed above. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
