EMI Promises Downloadable Music
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/15/002250

[0]SataiCam writes "[1]The Economist has [2]an article up referring to
EMI's plans to implement digital music downloading starting on December
1 through a whole host of 'distributors'. They claim it will allow
users to get music in 'the formats they are demanding' (ogg?), to burn
copies of songs, and download them to other devices. Here's the

device from [1]Univeral Electronics. The interface is a blank
electro-luminescent touch-screen. The 'buttons' are animated graphics
drawn to match any device you choose . You can update new device
interfaces via a modem (specs aren't clear how exactly). You can also
define 'macro' buttons to do multiple tasks with one button. Apparently
it also has a built-in motion-sensor and turns itself on when you pick
it up. You can't buy it directly in the U.S. yet. [2]Here's a British

Linux Kernel Bugzilla Launched

[0]paskie writes "Martin J. Bligh of IBM [1]announced launch of a
[2]Bugzilla bug tracking database for 2.5 linux kernel series - it's at
[3]bugme.osdl.org. Finally there will be some possibility to easily

Although they seem to be busting them for fraud via spam rather than

87GB On DVD-Sized Media
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/2016258

[0]BostonMACOSX points to this report in the Detroit News that says, in

times more data on a disk than a common DVD can hold, using optical

"an epoxy glue sold at hardware stores and a glass-like substance," but
written with a currently expensive laser.

W3C Policy To Favor Royalty-Free Patents Only

Using Your Own Name May Be Infringement, Part 2

phillymjs writes "We're probably all familiar with [0]Uzi Nissan and
his fight to keep his nissan.com domain name from the clutches of
Nissan Motors. Well, more same-name idiocy came to light today-- the
[1]Atlanta Journal-Constitution is [2]reporting that their staff music
writer, Bill Wyman, has received a cease-and-desist letter from lawyers
representing former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, for "a seriously
misleading and, arguably, an intentional, unauthorized exploitation of
our client's name, goodwill and publicity value." It should be

Taiwan Asks Microsoft To Open Windows Source
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/1813251

[0]Andy Tai writes "According to [1]this China Times article (in
Chinese), the Republic of China government has asked Microsoft to open
Windows source code. The official, Lin Jua-Cheng, in charge of the
[2]'e-government' initiative, says many other countries have also sent
similar requests to Microsoft. Lin explains that without Windows source
code, the government cannot add custom firewall functionalities to
Windows based systems in wide use, and that is very bad for the
information security of Taiwan. Microsoft refused to publicly release
the source in the past using reasons of copyright protection, but Lin
emphasizes this request is reasonable since it is based on (government
users') necessity." Read on for a bit more, too. (Can anyone suggest an
online Chinese <--> English translation engine that produces other than
    gibberish?)

Spam-X 2.0
http://freshmeat.net/releases/103518/

Spam-X is a very unique and effective proactive approach to spammers.
Not only does it act as a spambot tarpit by trapping a spambot into
requesting page after page of random, fake email addresses, it also
acts as though it were on a very slow link by taking a full minute to
send each page of sixty random mailto: links. It outputs extremely
minimal HTML in an effort to minimize its bandwidth impact, while at
the same time allowing you to flood a visiting spambot's database with
thousands of worthless email addresses and consume a great deal of the
spambot's time. Placing a small or hidden link to the Spam-X script
above any valid mailto: links on your site will hopefully trap the
visiting spambot and prevent it from actually harvesting your valid
    email addresses.

functionality to the Java platform. They allow the programmer to create
and read symbolic links, read and write registry values, launch a file
through the IShell API, and have a system-tray icon with associated
menu options. Most functions can be used on all platforms, but some are
    only available under Windows.

Slashcode
How to kickstart meta-moderation?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/13/0311207

I have a small slash site with a small number of users (by design) with
a few dozen stories and probably fewer than 200 comments posted so far.
The slash engine is handing out moderation points, perhaps because I
reset some of the configuration variables. But meta-moderation is not
operating.I recall that this has something to do with the number of
moderations (I'd look in the archives but the search function on
slashcode has been down for a while...). Unfortunately, I have one user
who could stand some meta-moderation NOW, before he drives other users
away with his down-mods. Yet I don't see any configuration variables or
anything else I can tweak to make meta-moderation start up. I would
rather the enforcement of community standards come from the community
rather than some heavy-handed act by the site administration. Any way
    to force meta-moderation on?

Show Domains: Explain, please.
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/057254

On the user comments options page, an option exists to "Show the links
domain only in recommended situations". What are the "recommended
situations", exactly? How does this differ from the option to "Always
    show link domains"?

Upgrading to MySQL 4?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/03/015232

In order to support some other projects I need to roll out on my
server, I need to upgrade to a real ACID database, which supports
transactions. Has anybody yet tried using Slash running on MySQL 4.0,
which now supports transactions? Are there any caevats or tricks to
doing the switchover, beyond the general upgrade notes for MySQL?

Slash plugins and version 2.3
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/0552241

I've been looking at a lot of modules (specifically email.pm and
Galleria), and it appears that they all require Slash version 2.3. Is
upgrading from 2.2.6 to one of the 2.3 versions dangerous? Is it as
simple as compiling and installing? Are there places to get these
plugins written for the release version of Slash? Or am I being a
    nincompoop?

How to Make Users Authors?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/200220

What is the proper way to turn users into authors? I'm interested in
this because I would like to use Slash as something my group uses to
communicate with each other and the world. I would like the people in
the group to function as the authors since it is their site. I've been
looking around in documentation and FAQs but can't find this documented
    anywhere.

SubnetID is masked using what?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/1959257

When Slash stores the SubnetID in the database, what Subnet mask is it
using? I was hoping to find this in the vars table, but no luck. Any
    ideas?

www.vorlonspace.org
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/29/2232226

It's still in development for other things, but vorlonspace.org is now
up and running (for the most part). Thanks to the guys on the irc
channel that helped me with some of the configuration issues I had.
This site is going to be a nexus of Babylon 5 information stemming from
the television show to the out of print customizable card game.

www.toborguru.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/28/037201

I have a new site up and running, not Much in the way of content but I
do have some information about one of my projects up at this point.
    Enjoy.

Code for Moderator Status Headline on Front Page?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/26/1952222

Slashdot is now running a very useful banner on the front page when the
user is a moderator: "You have X Moderator Points! Use 'em or lose
'em!". My users have been asking for something like this for weeks. Can
someone point me to the appropriate template mod please?

Comment Status "Read-only" means what, exa
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/24/1558218

There are 3 posible commentcodes defined in the default installation of
the code_param table: "Comments Enabled", "Comments Disabled", and
"Read Only". The first two options are fairly obvious, either allowing
or disallowing comments in the discussion (I presume). But what is the
"Read Only" option for? How does it differ from "Comments Disabled"?
