Slashdot
Attempts To Stop Music Sharing Pointless?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/0546213

job0 writes "An interesting [0]paper (Word document) has been submitted
by some Microsoft employees (although they are careful to state that
that the views are theirs and not necessarily Microsoft’s) to the
[1]2002 ACM Workshop on Digital Rights Management stating that attempts
by the record industry to stop music copying will fail simply because
    a) the growth and availability of affordable broadband and cheap data
storage devices and b )ability of users to circumvent any DRM measures
means that the number of people willing to swap is growing and will
soon outstrip attempts to shut them down. The paper goes to suggest
that the record industry should concentrate their efforts on trying
music cheaper and easier to get hold off. I wonder if Hilary and
friends have had a read. The BBC is [2]also carrying the story."
(OpenOffice has no problem with the paper, btw.)

AMD Announces A Shift In Focus From PC Processors
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/0556252

[0]slughead writes "Forbes Magazine is reporting that AMD [1]will no
longer compete with Intel to make faster, smaller, and more efficient
processors. Just as Mac users would be worse off if Windows didn't
exist, Intel users will be much worse now that AMD will no longer
compete. You see, there's this thing called demand, and when there are
no competing products in a market, a good or service will always
increase the price to the economic equilibrium, unless forced not to by
the state (forget that right now, communists!!). In English: you're
going to get less new technology, and higher prices on existing
technology." On the other hand, AMD is definitely not exiting the chip
business -- they're just trying to branch out from chips for
    microcomputers.

Defense Department 'eDNA' Plan Withdrawn
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/24/0143254

An anonymous reader points out this [0] report on News.com from Declan
McCullagh of a far-reaching plan (now withdrawn) to curtail much online
privacy through the use of biometric markers, excerpting "The idea
involved creating secure areas of the Internet that could be accessed
only if a user had such a marker, called eDNA, according to a report in
Friday's New York Times." Perhaps they'll withdraw the [1]plan to track
    everything you buy next.

Please Don't Ask Me About Windows On Christmas
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/2353217

Like many Slashdot users I spend a wee bit of my otherwise leisure time
doing gratis tech support for people I may not even know. I usually
don’t mind too much but last Christmas I got more than one call from
distant relatives that, along with wanting to spread holiday cheer, had
me weigh in on whatever might be wrong with their new gadget. I was
pleased as punch to see [0]this article in the [1]NYT (F.R.Y.Y.Y) about
where I might be able to send the less techo hip. If you do *Windows*
tech support for grandma after hours this article might also come in
handy." Here are a couple of [2]previous [3]articles about the sorry
state of conventional support options -- perhaps articles like this
will spark some entrepreneurial ideas, too.

Software For Ransom
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/2313213

[0]rbp writes "I just received a message from Adam Theo on the
[1]Jabber [2]Developers Mailing List about what he calls [3]"The Ransom
Model" for software publishing. The principle, according to the above
linked site, is that the "rights to the source code remain restricted
until a set amount of money is collected or a set date passes, at which
point the code is freed". Seems like a very interesting way to make
money and produce free software. I think it's worth discussion. Take a
look at the [3]Ransom Model webpage and join the [4]Ransom mailing
list! (You might also be interested in recent news about [5]Blender)"
Reader Apreche adds a link to a [6]Freshmeat editorial piece which
draws on Theo's idea, writing "This has some obvious problems, but it
is worth discussing. The biggest problem I see is where vaporware fits
    into the equation."

Portable.NET Now 100% Free Software
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/2214215

rhysweatherley writes "Finally after months of hard work and bucket
loads of caffeine, the [0]DotGNU community has finally got
[1]Portable.NET to the point of building our C# libraries on many Free
Software platforms with our own C# compiler. This is a big deal!
Portable.NET is now 100% pure Free Software, with no dependencies on
third party C# tools. The compiler, which is written in C, bootstraps
off gcc, so there are no icky 'how to compile the compiler' problems.
And it's fast! The DotGNU team consists of lots of contributors, many
of whom are coincidentially named 'Rhys Weatherley,' but this wouldn't
have been possible without the support of the DotGNU community,
especially the Weekend Warriors. .NET is not the only thing we are
doing. We're playing around with JVM and Parrot (of perl6 fame)
backends to the compiler. And we have a C compiler front-end that
generates pure bytecode apps that can run on any decent CIL
implementation (Portable.NET, Mono, etc). We are about 95% of the way
towards our first milestone of an ECMA-compatible C# implementation.
There are lots of things still to be done in the low-level C#
libraries, runtime engine, and the compiler. So, if you have some time
on your hands, and like messing with languages and stuff, like yours
truly ... have look and maybe have some fun!"

Genesi Introduces Dedicated MorphOS PCs
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/1945241

[0]Velcro_SP writes "When was the last time a company had the nerve to
attempt a worldwide introduction of an all-new desktop computer with
dedicated OS? Genesi has been demonstrating [1] prototypes all around
Europe, most recently in Poland, in the USA, and is even making noise
about Moscow. Throwing all caution to the wind they are moving past
beta stage, announcing the [2]consumer release scheduled to occur at an
Aachen, Germany convention on December 7th and 8th. The Pegasos is a
PPC processor-based computer designed and manufactured in Europe. It
runs MorphOS, a PPC OS based on the Quark microkernel."

Lik-Sang To Take On The Big 3?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/1848253

    [0]kableh writes "According to a [1]press release on [2]Lik-Sang's
website, the gaming accessory company has new management, and is
prepared to mount a strong defense in their upcoming lawsuit against
Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. "Just a few days after having received
High Court Orders not allowing us to sell Mod Chip products for the
Playstation 2 and Flash Linker products for the Nintendo Gameboy
Advance, Lik Sang realized that the powers of those three multi-billion
dollar corporations are simply infinite compared to the budgets and
resources businesses like Lik Sang have available. Their legal actions
have been hurting our customers and our business a lot in the last
couple of weeks, so that we have finally decided to let somebody else
take over Lik-Sang.com and solely concentrate on the lawsuit", says
Alex Kampl, Director of Lik Sang International Limited."

Library Censorware Blocks Own Site
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/23/1912212

squiggleslash writes "The Daily Dayton News reports that a
demonstration of a new website for a library in Piqua, Ohio, [0]went
horribly wrong when the site was blocked by the library's own
censorware. Why? Because the library, founded by and named after
businessman Leo Flesh 70 years earlier, had the domain name
www.fleshpublic.lib.oh.us. And that key word, 'Flesh,' was a no-no as
far as Flesh Public Library's copy of Net Nanny was concerned." And for
an extra dose of tragicomic priority reversal, the library actually
decided to change its domain name rather than have Net Nanny fix the
erroneous blocking. I hope no one at the library wants to read about
    the [1]fleshpots of Egypt.

[0]Makarand writes "According to this [1]article on NewsFactor, a
Hungarian company, Timothy Technologies, wants to turn the Internet
into a pervasive Remote Control. This device, called [2] FlatStack,
allows users to operate home appliances using the web. The FlatStack is
an entire web server on a tiny circuit board which can be connected to
the Internet and wired to the device needing remote control. Later
versions of FlatStack will connect to appliances wirelessly. The
FlatStack, with a variety of applications at home, can also be adapted
in offices, factories and agricultural settings. It is expected to sell
    for around $75."

machines. It understands concatenation, union (the "or"
operator), kleene star, subtraction, and intersection, as well as some
    helpers like "!", "?" and "+". Ragel's
finite state machines are closed under all of its operators. This

Slashcode
What exactly is isolation mode for?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/19/074249

Each section has an isolation mode property, that determines (I think)
wether or not sories from that section will be displayed on the front
page or not. In addition, each story has it's own DisplayMode property,
that, in effect, does the same thing. Which takes precedence? If Slash
always uses the individual story's displaymode to determine whether to
display the story, what's the point of the section-level isolation
    mode?

Restricting Article Access?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/19/073238

I've just started up a new slash site, however one feature that I would
like, which doesn't seem to exist, is the ability to restrict users
from reading certain stories. I know this seems counter-productive,
however I have a valid reason. Namely that I have a subset of users who
have more privileges, and thus stuff applies to them that wouldn't
apply to regular users. It seems like the concept of a "security
level", which users have, might be an ideal way to restrict Article
viewing. I'm sure I can kludge something myself, but if there's already
a supported/good way to do this, then that would be great.

How to kickstart meta-moderation?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/13/0311207

I have a small slash site with a small number of users (by design) with
a few dozen stories and probably fewer than 200 comments posted so far.
The slash engine is handing out moderation points, perhaps because I
reset some of the configuration variables. But meta-moderation is not
operating.I recall that this has something to do with the number of
moderations (I'd look in the archives but the search function on
slashcode has been down for a while...). Unfortunately, I have one user
who could stand some meta-moderation NOW, before he drives other users
away with his down-mods. Yet I don't see any configuration variables or
anything else I can tweak to make meta-moderation start up. I would
rather the enforcement of community standards come from the community
rather than some heavy-handed act by the site administration. Any way
    to force meta-moderation on?

Show Domains: Explain, please.
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/057254

On the user comments options page, an option exists to "Show the links
domain only in recommended situations". What are the "recommended
situations", exactly? How does this differ from the option to "Always
    show link domains"?

Upgrading to MySQL 4?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/03/015232

In order to support some other projects I need to roll out on my
server, I need to upgrade to a real ACID database, which supports
transactions. Has anybody yet tried using Slash running on MySQL 4.0,
which now supports transactions? Are there any caevats or tricks to
doing the switchover, beyond the general upgrade notes for MySQL?

Slash plugins and version 2.3
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/11/01/0552241

I've been looking at a lot of modules (specifically email.pm and
Galleria), and it appears that they all require Slash version 2.3. Is
upgrading from 2.2.6 to one of the 2.3 versions dangerous? Is it as
simple as compiling and installing? Are there places to get these
plugins written for the release version of Slash? Or am I being a
    nincompoop?

How to Make Users Authors?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/200220

What is the proper way to turn users into authors? I'm interested in
this because I would like to use Slash as something my group uses to
communicate with each other and the world. I would like the people in
the group to function as the authors since it is their site. I've been
looking around in documentation and FAQs but can't find this documented
    anywhere.

SubnetID is masked using what?
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/30/1959257

When Slash stores the SubnetID in the database, what Subnet mask is it
using? I was hoping to find this in the vars table, but no luck. Any
    ideas?

www.vorlonspace.org
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/29/2232226

It's still in development for other things, but vorlonspace.org is now
up and running (for the most part). Thanks to the guys on the irc
channel that helped me with some of the configuration issues I had.
This site is going to be a nexus of Babylon 5 information stemming from
the television show to the out of print customizable card game.

www.toborguru.com
http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=02/10/28/037201

I have a new site up and running, not Much in the way of content but I
do have some information about one of my projects up at this point.
    Enjoy.
