After another longer pause, a new version of netrik is now out. There is a fairly simple, but very convenient new feature: If you go back to a page from history (or reload the current one), the link which was active when leaving the page is not only reactivated when it's still in the same place, but also if the page is somewhat different than it was. This is especially useful when reading newstickers or other dynamic pages. But even changing ads can cause layout changes, so this can also help with otherwise static pages. Ohioedge CRM 1.3.1_FinalRC2 is released... http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=255862 Ohioedge CRM 1.3.1 Final RC2 contains a minor but significant update to the PDF reports module. Wiki! is a content management system which can be (and is) used for anything from a broad community site to a personal weblog-type setup. It is written in PHP and requires no database system running. Features include user accounts management, complete templating and full message customisation/translation. The new release is once again running at http://wiki.sourceforge.net JPluck 0.9 beta 2 http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=255030 JPluck is Java-based toolkit for creating Plucker (a popular PalmOS document format) documents. It includes the easy-to-use JPluck X GUI for managing and downloading sites. Beta 2 has several important improvements including a scheduling system, improved Windows HotSync, and conversion of documents to XML for postprocessing. - New: Scheduling Documents can now be scheduled for conversion on specific days of the week and times of the day. More information on the special Scheduling page. (See the Manual section on the site.) - Improved Windows HotSync conduit The conduit has been upgraded significantly and is now part of the main distribution. The big improvement is that PDBs can be synced to RAM right after they have been generated, while the rest of the documents are downloaded and queued in parallel. This can greatly reduce HotSync time when you convert multiple documents, especially on a serial or IR connection. The second improvement is that you can instruct the conduit to convert only scheduled and due documents. Finally, the Windows installer now registers the conduit automatically. (Note that the conduit cannot sync PDBs to memory cards yet. Documents meant to be stored on memory cards are still synced at the end of the HotSync process. This will be addressed shortly.) - New: Broken links handling Links to pages that are not present in the resulting Plucker document can be given a distinct color or removed from the document altogether. - New: HTML to XML conversion dialog This feature is meant for developers who want to create XSLT stylesheets to transform HTML pages. Simply specify a filename or URL and JPluck automatically retrieves the HTML page and converts it to well-formed XML. You can then paste this XML into a dedicated XSLT editor and develop stylesheets there. - Improved character handling JPluck now translates Unicode entities to the PalmLatin character set where possible. Examples include the curly quotes, the promille, the ellipsis and the Euro. - Improved logging JPluck C can now send log messages to standard out, a log file and the progress window simultaneously. JPluck X can now automatically save messages to a global log file and/or to a JXL-specific local log file. - Miscellaneous Added the ability to override the user agent on a per-Document basis. Added the option to specify the HotSync destination on a per-Document basis. Made several interface improvements. Slashdot New Computer Program Determines "Hitability" http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/26/2051221 [0]illuminatedwax writes "It looks like the process of homogenizing the mediocrity of Top 40 radio is going to be aided by a computer, according to an [1]article from the Music Industry News Network. [2]Polyphonic HMI has developed a new program called Hit Song Science (HSS) and compares "underlying mathematical patterns" in current hit songs and compares them to a new song to determine if it will become a hit or not. Looks like we can expect even more of the same old junk being recycled for us on the radio, although the article claims that it 'will allow new sounds and styles to flourish.'" A hardware guy once hypothesized that the large memory-move operation was creating electronic 'noise' which was then picked up and audibly amplified by my speaker. I unwired my speaker, removed it from the machine and put it in a different room, and the phenomenon still occurred. At this point I assumed it was something going on/emanating from the monitor itself. Now I have a TiBook laptop with an LCD panel. At quiet moments I can still hear it when I drag windows around. I have tried doing big memcpy's & the like, I don't get the same noise. I've been wondering about this for years. Anybody know what gives?" Where is that effort at today? [0]vnunet has this [0]Q&A with Microsoft security chief Stuart Okin. Slow, steady progress seems to be the result. They've targeted Security, Privacy, Reliability and Business Integrity, but so far have had a go at Privacy. Okin indicates the strategy may take 5 to 15 years, but more immediate milestones are targeted within the next two years and focusing on reducing vulnerabilities in the next version of Windows, rather than attempting to fix 2000 or XP. He is currently using a raid array and while quite large, it's not as fast as he had hoped. I had an idea and wanted to know if there is a way to make it a reality, so of course I though of all the brilliant minds here. I have about a dozen Pentium II computers with 1GB of RAM. I would like to upgrade them to 2GB and throw in some gigabit NICs and create a 1.9GB RAMdisk on each one. Then I want to use one of the computers to RAID the RAMdisks together to be shared via Samba most likely. They are all 1U systems, with no HDD's, just a 64MB IDE flash disk. Any ideas out there?" Has anyone successfully put together such a system? How well did it work for you and are there any caveats that you would like to share with others who would do the same? Using Kartouche, however, people can help the translation effort by entering suggested translations over the Web (or LAN) with just a browser. Kartouche uses PHP to load the pot files into a MySQL database (one file to a table), and then provides a front-end for people to add suggested translations, and a back-end for the translation co-ordinator to accept or reject those suggestions. Kartouche could also be used for GNOME files and for other apps if input/output filters were developed. Slashcode Slash not emailing Daily Headlines / Stories http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/26/176227 I have got a basic install up and running and so far everything is behaving as expected in terms of the web ui. My previous post regarding external authentication is being followed up with the developers of our current community software, I will post whatever developments come from that should others find it useful. One oddity I am noticing is that the website is not emailing me like it did the very first day. I received a report on the activity along with the news headlines. The next day and from then on in I have not received any mail. The system is mailing correctly. New registrations and password requests come through without any problems at all. It seems limited to the cronish sort of things. I can not find any errors in the logs to help guide me here, has anyone else experienced this? One thing I did do that may have broken something was change my slash install from on domain to another by going through the install process again. Any pointers would be most appreciated, Mitchell Installing Slash article on Linux Journal website http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/26/176200 Linux Journal have just published on their website an article of mine called "Installing Slash for a Private Project". Rather than a definitive HOW-TO, it's more of a description of what I went through to get things working. --Paul Barry Release of Galleria Photo Gallery plugin v1.0 http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/22/1851255 The title says it all. Galleria v1.0 finally made it out of beta and has been released. More information is at Lottadot.com Slash::Blob http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/2044216 I've added Slash::Blob to the main dist in CVS. Its a module for storing binaries and serving them up on the web. It will be the foundation for most of the new features we are adding so that we can use images and pdf files with stories (and other subsystems). If you are writing modules you may find it useful for your own applications. Feedback is welcome. Link Tag to Enable Auto-Discovery of RSS Files http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/21/1652216 Recently, I have been making small changes to my Slash sites to make them integrate better into the weblog communities dominated by Blogger, Radio from Userland, Movable Type, and similar tools. I found out that some of the weblog aggregation tools look for a specific link tag in the head portion of a site's home page in order to locate that site's RSS file. This is the kind of thing that can be added to a template without changing any code. Here's the code itself: <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="__YOUR_RSS_URL__"> For more information about the research I did to arrive at this conclusion, see the article How Weblog Monitors Automatically Discover RSS Feeds on CTDATA.com. ExploitSeattle http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/20/0731202 ExploitSeattle is your daily dose of events occuring in the Emerald City. SuSE8.1 installation test failures for Mysql modul http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/18/2151208 I have installed slash test sites on debian a few times before, but now I'm trying to install a permanent site on SuSE8.1 I'm having problems installing Bundle::Slash - MIME, Mysql modules & libapreq are all failing their tests. I'm installing Bundle::Slash within a perl shell. I'll concentrate on Mysql module here. I'm no perl expert (not even a perl beginner), but it seems to be a problem with lib.pl in testing the Mysql module. At line 253 & 254, my build complains about these 2 lines with "Illegal character in prototype for main::ErrMsgF : @_ at t/lib.pl line 254" Here's the lines, what's wrong with them ? If they're wrong, how come they're in the bundle ? sub ErrMsg (@_) { print (@_); } sub ErrMsgF (@_) { printf (@_); } There's also a warning during the "perl Makefile.PL" phase about CAPI & PL_FILES which I don't understand either. " WARNING: CAPI is not a known parameter. WARNING: PL_FILES takes a hash reference not a array reference. Please inform the author. " Again, if the code is wrong, why is it bundled as a stable release ? I suspect that my problems are just a side effect of something else....can anyone out there point me in the right direction? I have a build log if anyone needs to see it. thanks! Nou la SURSE.RO http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/17/1851222 Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I started my own slash-site, targeted at the Romanian audience. The site is intented to be a Romanian version of Slashdot, but focus falls on local stories. Enabling Comment Counting on Main Screen http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/19/1746215 Just installed Slash to support an internal project at work - sorry, site is not visible from the Net. I can't work out how to add the "comments counter" after the "Read More ... " link. I searched this site and the mailing list archive at sourceforge with no success. I know that it is probably something simple, but I can't find it. Can anyone help? --Paul Barry Discussion Posts http://slashcode.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/18/1753223 So here's the deal - I've got my site up and running and everything is looking and working fine. Except for one thing that could mean the whole project falls apart. So we all know stories need to be approved before they are posted, right? So, we have discussions which don't (necessarily) require approval before they can be published, hence providing the lay-user an opportunity to create 'posts' to a Discussion Board. However, it looks as if when I post a discussion, it is only displayed in my user profile and is not listed in the 'Active Discussions' list. To create somewhat of a bulletin board, I'd like to be able to have all user discussions appear in that list of active discussions. I've noticed the same thing happens here with Slashcode too. Can it be changed? And if so, how?
