Lindows CEO Funds XBox Hacking Contest
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/04/1522202

[0]Kai writes "PCWorld.com recently posted an [1]article on how Lindows
CEO Michael Robertson is funding the 'Linux on XBox Hacking Challenge'.
He was previously annonymous donor who donated $200,000 to the project.
His donation will be split in to two prizes, one to who completes part
A of the challenge, and the other to the who completes part B. Part A,
running Linux on the XBox, has already been completed, but Part B,
running Linux on XBox with no hardware modifications has yet to be
completed. Part A of the challenge can be downloaded from
[2]Sourceforge." Without a bios change, it seems like part B might be a
bit tricky. T. adds: Tricky, but not hopeless. Eric C. writes "The
[3]Neo Project recently updated its client so users can use free
processor cycles to try and crack the private key that Microsoft uses
    to sign Xbox software."

BBC To Ditch "Tomorrow's World"
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/04/1415207

Pipsicola writes "The [0]BBC news site reports their decision to ditch
the Popular science show, Tomorrows World , after 30 years. It may not
have had the most bleeding edge content (we often dubbed it 'Yesterdays
World' ...), but it was one of the few programmes which fired the
imagination of young British nerds. Several generations of Britain's
scientists and technologists grew up watching TM. Lets hope the BBC
fulfills its promise to replace it with more science-based shows using
a different format. Which formats have worked in other countries I
    wonder?"

    [0]Phillip M. Torrone writes "I didn't realize it, but I've been using
a Segway HT for one month as of 01/04/03. To put it simply--it's been
great and the HT has exceeded all expectations, I'm cautiously
optimistic that this was a great purchase and look forward to the next
30 days. You can read, see and hear about my experiences here:

life, but they do look fun.

Number of Jobs by Programming Language
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/01/04/2311217

search engines. The [1]results are interesting (to me, at least). Are

Trustworthy Computing in 2002
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/01/02/1445254

    - By Chris Pike, reprinted from Pikeus - 2002 was the year that Linux
made big news and Microsoft admitted it was their greatest threat.
Microsoft's continued attempts at spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt
(FUD) in an effort to turn people away from Linux and Open Source
didn't get them anywhere. Their focus on increased security didn't get
them anywhere either. To top it off, they even ended up paying people
    to use their software.

P.E.T. 1.3 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=240443

P.E.T. (PHP Processor Engine for Templates) class is released in
version 1.3. P.E.T. cleans up your PHP scripts by using templates for
output. It is quick to learn and easy to use but still powerful. With
very few lines of code you display your output, use Server Side
Includes, dump the result to disk and more. The new method
"$pet->get_content" returns all content added by $pet->add_content
until this moment for the reason of debugging.

Perl Shell 1.0 "Dithyramb" released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=240459

The Perl Shell (psh) combines aspects of bash and other shells with the
power of Perl scripting. It aspires to be your primary login shell.
After a long period of time with no releases (and two or more promises
of "OK, I'll release it", I have bundled the latest code in CVS into
the newly released version 1.0. I believe that Markus Peter is
responsible for most of the code in this release ($Markus++), although
I think there were some patches or clues from other folks ($folks{$_}++
foreach @contributor). I have dubbed this the "Dithyramb" release
    (http://www.focusresearch.com/gregor/wow/2001-09-29.html). Here are
some notes about what is new (you can find more in the CHANGES file on
the web page noted below): * New 'if' builtin * New 'forfile' builtin:
"forfile *.txt less $_" is equivalent to bash's "for i in #.txt; do
less $i; done" * New redirection and piping syntax (incompatible with
old sh- like syntax): "ls >[=FILEHANDLE]" * Backticks work * A strategy
for finding and running Darwin/Mac OS X Appbunlde programs. * Support
for && and || with simple commands * Themes * Major startup time
reduction NOTE: You may need to modify your startup scripts / rc files
with this version. Please see README.upgrade in the distribution for
more information. You can find out more at The Perl Shell (psh) at:
    http://www.focusresearch.com/gregor/psh/ Please note that Windows
functionality in this release has not seen much testing, so it may not
work correctly in that environment. Please post experience reports to
the mailing list. We are looking for folks interested in helping keep
future releases working under Windows environments. If you are so
inclined, then please so indicate. The next wave of changes being
contemplated for psh will take things in a new direction. First, where
the desire for shellish and perlish behaviors get in each other's way,
we will be moving toward shellish behavior. This will very likely
entail some modifications to the syntax required to advise the shell
"here be perl". Second, we are considering some changes which will make
psh more generic. So, while it will remain The Perl Shell (from an
implemenatation perspective), it may become The Poly Shell (from a
user's perspective). There is room for discussion on the psh-dev list
for those with comments, concerns, ideas, queries, curses, etc. as we
flesh out the details. Enjoy, -- Gregor

SynCE 0.6 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=240593

The purpose of the SynCE project is to provide a means of communication

WinTV PVR 250/350 Capture Only App 1.3 release
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=240184

This release is a stable release level that appears to work for people
in numerous countries and TV standards(NTSC and PAL). As the reports
seem positive from the 1.2.3 Release that corrected the Path issue in
this release the trace log file can now be disabled via a ini setting.
Command line capture only application for the Hauppauge WinTV PVR
250/350 Capture Cards. This application supports a subset of the
Hauppauge WinTV2000 application's command line options for capturing
directly to disk with minimal CPU utilization.

DataVision 0.6.0 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=240161

DataVision is an Open Source reporting tool similar to Crystal Reports.
Reports can be designed using a drag-and-drop GUI. They may be run,
viewed, and printed from the application or exported as HTML, XML, PDF,
LaTeX2e, DocBook, or tab- or comma-delimited text files. The output
files produced by LaTeX2e and DocBook can in turn be used to produce
PDF, text, HTML, PostScript, and more. Changes: * All table and column
names are now case-sensitive. When necessary, database table and column
names are quoted in SQL queries which allows for use of mixed-case
names. Warning: this new behavior may break some existing reports,
especially if you generated your report XML files manually and used all
upper-case for your table and column names. Use the new -q command line
flag to disable the quoting behavior and case sensitivity. See the
discussion in "Database Name Case Sensitivity" in the User's Manual. *
A new designer GUI infrastructure. It's an application! It's an applet!
It's two GUIs in one! * Image fields' values are now URL strings
instead of file path strings. For the next few releases, image fields
will also accept absolute file paths and convert them to ``file:''
URLs. * The PDF layout engine now outputs the basic 14 PDF type 1
fonts. * The code editor pane in various windows (selection criteria,
formulas, etc.) now have a scroll bar and improved layout. Bug fixes: *
Under Windows, the field popup menus wouldn't. They do, now. * Under
certain conditions, the FieldPicker window would not open. * The PDF
layout engine now places text correctly on the page. * When creating a
new image field, if there is an error the error messages will be
displayed correctly. * The LaTeX layout engine now sets the page width
and height properly, instead of always using 8.5 x 11 inches (USA
Letter). It also sets the paper size when using A4, A5, B5, US letter,
US legal, or executive. * The report description text edit box now has
scroll bars when necessary, and won't go bonkers with long description
text. * Escape many XML attributes values so that ampersands and other
    characters are output correctly.

!!!We're proud to announce the addition of three Creative Mountain
Games supplements!!! Lexus Group Combat, Trundlefolk Culture Class and
County Clergy all make their debut this week in PCGen! On the
outputsheets you'll notice a new block for melee and ranged weapons. We
think you'll like it! For those of you who have created your own
outputsheets, the old tokens should all still work, we've simply added
new functionality and made use of that in the outputsheets included in
the official releases. We always recommend that users install new
versions of PCGen in a 'new' directory. Below is a list of everything
that has been addressed in this release. If you reported one of these,
please verify that it is was addressed properly. PCGen is available at
http://pcgen.sourceforge.net , and the main discussion group is at
