Australian Federal Court Overturns Legal Modchip Sales

An anonymous reader writes "Yesterday, the Australian Federal Court
overruled the [0]previous ruling on modchips in Australia. I am pretty
sure the overruled case is the mainstay for the 'legal' use of modchips
in Australia (predominantly Linux on the Xbox). Haven't seen this hit
the media yet, with the exception of the Australian Financial Review
referring to it in the Free Trade Agreement context. The [1]ruling can
be found here. Although not a lawyer, it appears the original judgement
was made on the basis that Sony did not provide a copy protection
system. Also noted is that there is limited commercial use for the mod
other than circumvention. Wonder what will happen to modchips for the
Xbox, given that it can be argued that running Linux could easily be
seen as commercial."

specification, introducing support for a new OGL Shading Language.

Palm OS Based Gaming Device Nears Release

by a couple former Palm employees, has been slowly unveiling the
features of their upcoming [1]Helix (Flash heavy link) handheld gaming
device. So far, the specs include a 480x320 16-bit color display, dual
Secure Digital (SD) slots, Bluetooth connectivity for wireless
multiplayer (Wi-Fi available through SDIO), multiple analog controls
including triggers, ATI Imageon graphics, and dual rechargable lithium
ion batteries (no word yet on battery life). In addition to some cool
sounding hardware, several prominent game companies are already signed
on to develop games for the Helix, including Activision and Midway. It
will also run traditional Palm apps like Calendar and Address Book.
Tapwave will continue to unveil a new feature each week for the next
few weeks, and the product is supposed to launch in September or

files the RIAA is searching on to find offenders. It seems the RIAA is
targeting a wide reach of music, including Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, Rock, Pop
and Country songs. Artists such as Ludacris, Michael Jackson, NAS,
Busta Rhymes, Keith Sweat and Musiq were very common throughout the
subpoenas. They've even created a helpful [1]chart showing exactly what
artists and songs seem to get one flagged."

researchers think they have a great potential for sensing hydrogen .

when crossing the border between real world sizes and nanoscopic
dimensions, according to a Penn State materials scientist." And now,
the very good news: titania nanotubes are cheap. So they'll be used in
industrial quality control in food plants and as weapons against

What Should a Community Computer Lab Offer?

Squashfs is a highly compressed read-only filestem for Linux. Release
1.3 adds support for FIFOs and sockets. It also has numerous
optimisations and small bug fixes. There are new patches for Linux
2.4.21 and Linux 2.6.0-test1. Squashfs compresses both files, inodes
and directories, and supports block sizes up to 32K for greater
compression. It is implemented as a kernel module under VFS.
