European Shuttle Program Update
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/2227251

Rolo Tomasi writes "ESA's reusable launch vehicle demonstrator,
Phoenix, was recently [0]wind tunnel tested to determine its low speed
aerodynamics. A free flight for Phoenix is planned for early summer
2004. In case you haven't heard of it yet, here's an [1]article from
last year, describing the Phoenix/HOPPER concept. Here's [2]another
page at ESA, but it seems to be available only in German. What's
interesting is the first sentence of the DLR press release, stating
that (my translation) 'Europe's future and competitiveness in space
substantially depend on an autonomous access to space and 'on a drastic
decrease in the transport costs of getting there.'"

NZ Spammer Shutdown Makes Big Difference
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/25/0024204

[0]lump writes "A notorious spammer, based in New Zealand, who had his
name and other personal info released first in [1]a national newspaper,
and then on the web, has [2]shut down his operation, citing harassment.
What interests me about this case is that, in the 5 or 6 days since he
has supposedly stopped operating, I personally have had one (1) spam
email, to an address which had previously averaged around fifty per
day. Colleagues report a similar reduction in spam. All I can say is
'excellent.' Hate to say it, but in this case, vigilante type action
seems to have had the desired result. This needs to be publicised, as
anything which slows down spam can only be a good thing."

How About A Cup Of The Answer To Everything?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/25/0133237

[0]Reiner Schulz writes "Douglas Adams [1]admittedly was a big fan of
Earl Grey tea. Here's [2]his enlightening entry in H2G2 on the subject
(pretty much straight out of [3]The Salmon of Doubt). And those
familiar w/ the Hitchhiker's Guide will remember the drink dispenser
from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe which, trying to figure
out how to brew the perfect cuppa, grabs all available computing
resources on board a certain starship. What a coincidence then that one
of the finest blends of Earl Grey on the planet in general and in the
    UK in particular is [4]Harrods' Earl Grey, Blend No. ... 42 . It's a
plausible theory as to the origin of the answer to everything, isn't
it? Earl Grey addicts like myself will certainly agree (even though
Douglas liked his w/ milk; I prefer lemon). So, what would be the
question? Perhaps, how about a nice cup of tea?"

Windows Is 'Insecure By Design,' Says Washington Post
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/2255231

Circuit Breaker writes "A Washington Post article says [0]Microsoft
Windows is insecure by design. Quote: 'Between the Blaster worm and the
Sobig virus, it's been a long two weeks for Windows users. But nobody
with a Mac or a Linux PC has had to lose a moment of sleep over these
outbreaks -- just like in earlier "malware" epidemics. This is not a

How Objective Is Microsoft's Search?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/2028216

bot writes "There have been a number of [0]stories on Microsoft trying
to do a 'Netscape' on Google.. what would a world in which Microsoft
provides search look like? A [1]search for 'linux' on msn.com give
amazon and ebay as the top two results, and a [2]microsoft site
promoting migration from Linux to Windows as the fourth listing. A

go, but regardless, this in a giantic amount of data, and to see it go

Open Asia: Open source in Afghanistan and Bangladesh
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/19/192235

    - by Frederick Noronha - This week we begin a country-by-country survey
of the availability of open source software across individual Asian
countries at the top of the alphabet, with Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Let SCO hang itself
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/1228211

    - by Eric S. Raymond - The confrontation between SCO and the
open-source community has now escalated to open war. I suppose, in
retrospect, that this was inevitable once SCO announced its intention
to sue on a theory that would make all open-source licenses invalid.
And we all know who's lurking like Emperor Palpatine behind Darl Vader,
funding his lawsuit to the tune of at least $6,000,000[1] even if not
    otherwise pulling his strings.

Microsoft seeks law to retroactively ban Finnish immigration
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/13/1726241

    - by David "cdlu" Graham - In his latest attempt to quell the Linux
uprising, Microsoft mastermind Bill Gates has pledged over
$2,500,000.00 to George Bush's 2004 election campaign if he passes a
law that bans anyone born in Finland from working in the United States,
and condemns all existing Finnish natives living in the US to
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba's Camp X-ray, where they are to be collectively
punished for the un-American ways of one ...

www.microsoft.com runs Linux? Up to a point ...
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/1351242

Aug. 17 - On Friday Microsoft changed its DNS so that requests for
www.microsoft.com no longer resolve to machines on Microsoft’s own
network, but instead are handled by the Akamai caching system, which
    runs Linux.

Versatility, cost spark Linux fever
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/24/1338251

BART depends on it. So do scientists at Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory. From Wall Street brokerage firms to Hollywood animators,
the Linux operating system, once a hobby for Microsoft foes, has
evolved into a potent force in the high-tech industry.

U.S. Army Brings Internet to Saddam's Hometown
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/2242231

TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - The U.S. army opened the first unrestricted
Internet access in Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit Saturday in a
bid to convince skeptical Iraqis their occupation will bring tangible
    benefits.

Dissection of the SCO Vegas presentation
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1428254

Anonymous Reader writes "I would like to take a moment to bring to your
attention some of the glaring problems with SCO's recent presentation
in Las Vegas. Their case has always been thin and their story up until
this point has been anything but straight and to the point. This is an
attempt to point out some of the more obvious flaws."

Dennis Ritchie: I wrote the SCO code
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1426242

Anonymous Reader writes "Dennis Ritchie has acknowledged he with Ken
Thompson wrote the code cited as "proof" by SCO. This seems to fit
perfectly with Bruce Perens' Analysis of SCO's Las Vegas Slide Show,
and undermine Blake Stowell's claim "At this point it's going to be his
    word against ours"."

WeLoveTheSCOInformationMinister.org
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1448237

Sure, everyone and their brother by now has noticed the striking
similarity of SCOfflaw CEO Darl McBride to a certain other individual
in the public relations field, generally more well-known but no less
reality-challenged. But like his counterpart, "Baghdad McBride" proves
himself beyond parody every time he opens his mouth, cramming both feet
farther and further in, and until he eventually implodes will no doubt
continue to offer up new pearls ...

Linux shows security superiority to Windows
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1436244

Nine years ago this month, a student from the University of Helsinki in
Finland released upon the world a piece of software code that would go
on to revolutionize the way people think of computer software. When
Linus Torvalds began working on his now famous Linux kernel in 1991,
the idea of "free software" was unheard of. Today, Linux is installed
on millions of PCs and is being embraced by hobbyists and professionals
    alike. Thanks to companies ...

IBM adds multithreading to Power 5
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1433233

Building on the technology it introduced with its Power 4 processor,
IBM last week announced it will incorporate simultaneous multithreading
into its upcoming 64-bit Power 5 processor. With its Power 4 chip, IBM
was able to significantly improve performance by incorporating two
microprocessor cores on the same dye. The Power 5 also packs two cores
on a dye, but each chip will be able to handle two threads
    simultaneously, increasing performance ...

No purchase order required
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/08/23/1225238

One of the best features of Free Libre, Open Source Software (FLOSS) is
that no purchase orders are required to test or deploy the software.
You may, however, need a big fat pipe to the Internet to download some
of the stuff. A quick list of some software that companies may find

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=303642

New features in BIE 5.5 include a new plug-in architecture allowing the
addition and removal of features without restarting; support for
    EDIFACT and HL7 document formats; HTTP Post and Run Command actions;
enhancements to the transaction log viewer and message schema

system will provide, over the next few releases, the ability to plug in
most other units of the BIE server. * Code Reorganization (Developers
Only) A reorganization of the codebase for BIE has begun, in
anticipation of broad architectural changes and refactoring planned to
begin in BIE 6.0. Source code, which previously lived exclucively under
the src/ directory, may now also be found under the commons-bie/,
    commons-tools/, installer/, plugins/, and src/ directories. * Added
Feature - Added HTTP Post action (contributed by Hugh Brien). * Added
    HL7 support. * Added EDIFACT support. * RFE 734256 - Allow transaction

authentication support for web services. MAP BUILDER: * Fixed a bug
that allowed macro parameters to be displayed after macro was deleted.
    * Added new macros: Convert Inches To Centimeters, Convert Centimeters
to Inches, Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, Convert Celsius to
Fahrenheit. BUG FIXES: * Fixed bug 774447 - Mail Configuration: smtp
authentication. * Fixed bug 784960 - Schema Generator fully expands all
elements. * Fixed bug 764738 Delimited data source does not understand
empty fields * Fixed bug 790579 - On upgrade if database connection not

Chiba 0.9.1 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=303472

This is mainly a maintainance release which fixes some issues with the
installation. Namely the xerces + xml-apis have been added again to the
war-files. Other modifications are limited to smaller corrections to
Schema2XForms builder, import statements and javadoc. Chiba provides an
implementation of the W3C XForms standard, thereby delivering generic,
    xml-based form-processing for the web.

phpWebSite 0.9.3-1 Stable Released!
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=303663

The phpWebSite development team has released version 0.9.3-1 of its
popular content management system. The main purpose of this release is
to address the recently discovered security vulnerability issues that
were posted across many security forums. Fixes for the XSS, DOS, and
SQL injection problems are all included. Many other updates have been
made to the core, providing the ability to run phpWebSite in SSL mode.
Over 40 bugs have been closed and 4 user submitted patches applied to
phpWebSite since the release of 0.9.3. All in all we feel this is one
of our most stable releases to date.

TclXML v3.0rc1
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=302894

Release candidate 1 of version 3.0 of the TclXML package is now
available. This release candidate introduces a binding for libxml2 to
the TclXML package. This allows an application to use the libxml2
parser class to parse an XML document, setting callbacks in the usual
fashion. No significant changes have been made to the pure-Tcl or expat
parser classes. It is planned to perform some bug fixes to the pure-Tcl
parser class for release candidate 2.

Turck MMCache for PHP version 2.3.23 is released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=303184

This is should be the last version prior to the stable 2.4.0 release.
Please test this release as much as possible. Turck MMCache is a PHP
Accelerator, Optimizer, Encoder and Dynamic Content Cache. It increases
performance of PHP scripts by caching them in compiled state, so that
the overhead of compiling is almost completely eliminated. Also it uses
some optimizations for speed up of PHP scripts execution. Turck MMCache
typically reduces server load and increases the speed of your PHP code
by 1-10 times. It has been tested with PHP 4.1.0 - 4.3.2 under Linux
and Windows with Apache 1.3 and 2.0. HTTP caching of mmcache.php was
disabled. Usage of POSIX semaphors on Mac OS X was disabled. Handling
of scripts with PHP syntax errors was fixed. ZE2 support was improved
    (tested with php5-200308140730).
