Digital Ink On Billboards
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0156239

cdneng2 writes "The [0]New York Times has this article [1]on a
revolutionary new billboard. It uses digital ink, versus the typical
CRT, LCD, Neon, or Plasma displays that are so prominent on the newer
billboards that wastes electricity. From the article: 'By creating a
paste made of tiny helix-shaped particles that can be minutely
manipulated with electric charges to reflect light in highly specific
ways, [2]Magink can produce surfaces that look like paper but behave
like electronic screens, rendering high-resolution, full-color images
without ink - or, as Magink executives like to refer to the process,
with digital ink.' The billboard can display images at 70 frames per
second." You can find [3]more articles on the billboard technology on
    the Magink website.

SBC Refuses To Name File-Sharing Users
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0147233

[0]securitas writes "The [1]New York Times reports that Internet
provider [2]SBC Communications has refused to identify computer users
accused by the RIAA of file-sharing copyrighted material. SBC is the
largest high-speed DSL provider with over 3 million subscribers. It
continues to refuse a response to the 300 subpoenas served by the RIAA
despite a [3]ruling against Verizon earlier this year. 'We are going to
challenge every single one of these that they file until we are told
that our position is wrong as a matter of law,' said James D. Ellis,
general counsel for SBC. He continues, '...We've got a long heritage in
which we have always taken a harsh and hard rule on protecting the
privacy of our customers' information.' Mirrors in [4]Tuscaloosa and

IT Training in the Military?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0034226

firehzd1 asks: "[0]Yesterday's article about the new Czar of Security
for the Department of Homeland Security raises a very important
question, especially lately. What type of opportunities are there for
IT work in the military/government. It seems every article I read is
bashing the govt/military for terrible IT decisions/systems but I never
hear the other side of the story. How bout we hear from those in the
field that can give us a idea of what it is like behind the other side
    of the heavily armed gate?"

SCO Claims $15,300,000 From SCOsource
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/17/0015207

Hollins writes "Yesterday, [0]SCO filed their [1]latest 10-Q. In it,
they claim over fifteen million dollars in revenue from their SCOsource
initiative (mostly from Microsoft and Sun) with a decline in revenue
from all other sources. A lot of interesting statements are in the
10-Q, including "The success of our SCOsource licensing initiative, at
least initially, will depend to a great extent on the perceived
strength of our intellectual property and contractual claims and our
willingness to enforce our rights. Many, particularly those in the open
source community, dispute the allegations of infringement that we have
    made"."

Worldwide State of Broadband - S Korea, Japan Lead
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/2356258

Geek of the Week writes "No surprise here, a report by the
International Telecommunications Union shows the US lagging in
broadband adoption. S Korea and Japan lead with between 60 and 70% of S
Korean households wired for speed, with Japan catching up quickly. The
U.S. ranks 11th. [0]Story here and the full press release can be found
on the [1]ITU website. Having traveled through Asia for business I
can't say I'm surprised, but it is disappointing that the availability
and price are in such sorry states here in the U.S."

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/16/2238255

An anonymous reader writes "Abiword 2.0 has been released. Finally the
Linux desktop has a quality word processor that is faster to load than
OpenOffice.org and includes proper footnotes. It also no longer uses
its own font directory. At the same time Enchant 1.0.0 has been
released, a cross-platform abstract layer to spellchecking. Enchant has
been proposed to be a Freedesktop.org standard." That's not the only
news, though: Abiword 2.0 is part of the [0]just-released GNOME-Office
1.0, which, as [1]riggwelter writes "coordinates GNOME2 versions of
AbiWord, Gnumeric, and GNOME-DB, the database interface." Sun's
StarOffice has just reached version 7, as well: read on below for some

rdiff-backup 0.13.2 (Development)

incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup
and ssh to securely back up to a remote location, and only the

NASM 0.98.38 is released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=310061

The most important change to 0.98.38 is that the broken ELF backend in
0.98.37 has (hopefully) been fixed. The Netwide Assembler, NASM, is an
80x86 assembler designed for portability and modularity. It supports a
range of object file formats, including Linux and NetBSD/FreeBSD a.out,
ELF, COFF, Microsoft 16-bit OBJ and Win32. It will also output plain
binary files. Its syntax is designed to be simple and easy to
understand, similar to Intel's but less complex. It supports Pentium,
P6, MMX, 3DNow!, SSE and SSE2 opcodes, and has macro capability. * Add
Makefile for 16-bit DOS binaries under OpenWatcom, and modify mkdep.pl
to be able to generate completely pathless dependencies, as required by
OpenWatcom wmake (it supports path searches, but not explicit paths.) *
Fix the STR instruction. * Fix the ELF output format, which was broken
under certain circumstances due to the addition of stabs support. *
Quick-fix Borland format debug-info for -f obj * Fix for %rep with no
arguments (#560568) * Fix concatenation of preprocessor function call
(#794686) * Fix long label causes coredump (#677841) * Use autoheader
as well as autoconf to keep configure from generating ridiculously long
command lines. * Make sure that all of the formats which support
debugging output actually will suppress debugging output when -g not
    specified.

We're finished with the main updates to mp4live. Our in-house test has
been running for 10 days still maintaining audio/video sync. These
changes were accomplished by updating to the V4L2 driver, and updating
faac. These changes have been submitted to CVS on sourceforge. To use
them you must install v4L2 (server/mp4live has a new html file telling
you how we accomplished that). The MPEG4IP project provides an MPEG and
IETF standards-based system for encoding, streaming, and playing MPEG-4
encoded audio and video. We also require a seperate installation of the
faac package, like we did with lame. You must go to www.audiocoding.com
and download the latest faac. Then, before configuring or compiling,
un-tar the faac_mpeg4ip_add.tar in the faac directory. Then configure,
build and install faac. faac_mpeg4ip_add.tar is used to install the
faac.h file. We will be working with the faac guys to have that as part
of their package. Then configure and install mpeg4ip. Bill

KDE 3.1.3(a) RPMs moved to stable
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=310176

The kde 3.1.3(a) packages have been moved to the stable repository. Get
'em while they're hot. The KDE for RedHat project intends to promote
the use of KDE and KDE-based applications on RedHat Linux. (3.1.4 is in
the works, and maybe, just maybe, we may see a preview of 3.2 showing
up in unstable in the not-too-distant future.).
