I guess she hasn't read Chaucer. 'Awful' comes from Middle English
'aweful' - full of awe - which has a positive meaning, similar to
'awesome'. It just got subverted somehow over the centuries.
Maybe you could restore your shattered reputation as a guest by telling
your mother-in-law that her food tastes 'artifical' (original meaning:
'made with great artistry') :-D
