But actually there's an very positive ancient meaning of "awful":

"Awful" = archaic "inspiring".

For example: "How awful to feel himself there an atom amidst the
infinity of nature!" 

This is just my 2 cents, because I am not native speaker neither and
used "awful" in some comments and I love English a lot ;-)
