Thanks Mark, I will try that as soon as I get the compilation working again.
Strangely Swfmill keeps crashing since today when I add more than one frame
to the swfdata.xml.
Btw: when I prepare my swf (adding 53 png image items to the library) with
the Flash IDE and then compile it with Mtasc the file size is ~84Kb but when
I create the same file structure with Swfmill and compile it with Mtasc the
file is ~118Kb.
I first thought that Flash uses JPG compression and hence the smaller size
but I've set all images to use the imported PNG compression which is
lossless so the final size should be the same. Any ideas on that?

Making an extra file as a preloader sounds like a different story but I'd
like to have one swf that keeps all stuff including the preloader.

I'm using a generic preloader that loads different swfmill/mtasc
movies and the -frame 2 works great :)
