For most implementations you would still connect to your own servers, 
again having a more native socket format would be a HUGE improvement as 
you would be able to implement stuff like IMAP, IRC, SQL, etc directly 
in flash w/o messing around with a translation layer. I for one would be 
the first to start a open source flash IRC project if we had native sockets.

Regarding external services, Im quite positive that freenode ect could 
be convinced to add a policy xml file on there servers that would allow 
you to connect directly using  a flash client.
