Anyone here into GIS? I'm searching for up-to-date (!), free (!), detailed and complete (world) vector data of administrative country borders, possibly also state/river/lake data. Searching through heaps of bullshit edu/gov/mil sites, the most appropriate match i found would be the "Digital Chart of the World", or VMAP0 (from nga.mil), a gigabyte-sized, quite detailed collection of more or less everything. The problem is that the VPF format they use is rather sophisticated and complicated, and there are no free tools to convert it into a simpler format such as SHP (there is one, MICRODEM, but it refuses to work on my machine). I'd much prefer a less sophisticated SHP format (i found numerous SHP resources, but most of them are either incomplete, outdated or payware). The alternative would be to sit down a few months and grok VPF to write a VPF2SHP converter, extracting the data relevant for me, but i wouldn't really want to do that ;) Anyone? cheers, claus.
ps: i'm thinking about writing an open source worldmap app/component for fp8.5/flex, just in case anyone would want to join me _______________________________________________ osflash mailing list [email protected] http://osflash.org/mailman/listinfo/osflash_osflash.org
