You know my first instinct with Mtasc was that the only problem with it was that it stuck to the mm compiler too closely and thought that the neckoML direction was really a big impromement, but I'm starting to think you may be right, if not enough folk use it, it could become a curio pretty easily, especially given the quality of the new mm compiler.

Of course I think that the reason lot of folk seemed afraid of learning the new language is because they are doing so already with MM's definition of actionscript which is like learning a new language every year and a half. I think folk may be burning out on "variations to skin a cat".

By trying to follow the progression of .as, Nicolas may just alienate future developers by exposing them all to macromedia's regular release cycle. In fact he may alienate himself from developing it and this may be part of the reason for creating his own language. Claus's sense is similarly a side effect of this constant release churn. He doesn't want to write it now only to have to do it again later. If Nicolas can create one language and stick to it, perhaps it's a way out of this. But Laszlo did this and Flash folk seem to ignore it, so maybe compatability is the key.

On the other hand one of the real benefits of open source is control and by creating his own language he gets control over this and can create something to inspire us all simultaneously.

In the end all I know is that I'm a very ignorant man, but I think it might be a good idea to have some sort of "economics of open source" list on osFlash, because it's such a sea change how the decissions are made with it that all I understand about it is how important it is while simultaneously how little I understand about it. Even if it ended up populated with lots of overly abstract nonsense and flames against mm, eventually something would be usefull (and might get through my thick head as to what these various changes mean for specific decisions the communitiy makes) and might find paths for particularly usefull projects like mtasc and deng.

For any trivia buffs, that's what I think. :D
