The actionscript virtual machine which is in 8.5 is a *completely new* implementation of actionscript - the bytecode will be substantially, if not completely, different. It's designed to use JIT compilation and all sorts of Java style performance enhancements. The 8.5 player will continue to support As2, by having a copy of the old AVM as well. However, the script performance improvements will only be accessible to AS3.

What "new features of the 8.5 player" are being referred to here?
Does anyone actually know what new features (if any) are in the Flash VM,
all the new features I have seen so far are in the AVM2 and accessed by AS3
I hadnt realised there were any enhancements to the VM being made for 8.5.

Short answer : Yes.
Long answer : At first the compiler will target current Flash VM so you can
start doing Flash content *right now* instead of waiting Player 8.5 to be
publicly released (i mean not alpha or beta anymore). Then after some time
AVM2 support will be added. It will be pretty easy since the language will
already support different platforms so having another target just suit well
with the whole architecture.
