Been using Debian for 5 years, now last spring switched to Ubuntu,
running now Ubuntu 5.10. Don't know though how much time I've got
to spend on this, but like to getting involved. At least to test
packages and to submit bugs, but maybe more.

Well, I've made one package from scratch long time ago when I thought
getting involved with Debian, + I've build some packages from source
packages, so have some knowledge about how Debian works.

Is ming project still active?

Soon eclipse 3.1.1 should be in Debian:
http://gnu.wildebeest.org/diary-man-di//index.php?p=27
So maybe talk to debian-java people how package eclipse plugins and
then package ASDT and some other plugins. And try to get them
built with free java from the Classpath project.
