Just thought I'd pipe in.

The company I work for has developed some fairly large Java client
applications (GlobeInvestorGOLD to name one,
http://gold.globeinvestor.com) and the developers who work on them don't
have very nice things to say about inconsistencies between VMs and VM
versions. I know they are regularly being called back to fix some bug
that affects just a single version of some VM.

I know this isn't everyone's experience with Java, and that more recent
versions have been great.

>From my perspective, I'm pretty happy that I don't have to deal with
these issues while developing applications for Flash.

what i'm trying to say is that java is not only a server side
technology. it's also a client side technology. i use it everyday on the
client side, for example for homebanking. there are a lot of java vm's
out there and not just one. i have the choice. no matter what system i
have running here, i have access to java. this is not the case for
flash. we are 100% dependent on adobe, it's seriously borked eulas, and
it's expensive licensing plans.
cheers,
claus.
