Java developers ask this all the time...

The reason *I* develop for flash is precicely because of its
consistency. Apart from between versions (and even that is handled
quite well) we can be abount 99% confident that things will work
across the board, with a little testing. Also, Flash is seen as being
more wdiely deployed than Java.

Of course, if there were different flavours of flash, and flash lost
that,  we'd be in a situation where Java/Javascript would start to
have some clear advantages.
