you can exclude everything but the altered skin movieclips in you library if you want, but it won't make any difference to the filesize as they will already be compiled with the component classes (asuming you are using swc files)
exporting the DefaultStyles movieclip includes the DefaultStyles class, which if you haven't already looked at, can show you the default styles for each component. When creating a new theme you will probably want to change other style aspects as well as the skin, and this is the place to do it. Things like default text styles, list spacing and orientation can be modified here if you then export the DefaultStyles movieclip so that the class is updated. Even then you don't need to include all skin movieclips contained within the DefaultStyles movieclip, but i tend to find keeping track of all skin movieclips referenced inside the DefaultStyles class is made easier if they are all sitting inside the DefaultStyles MovieClip, as nothing is then ever forgotten.
For the smallest possible filesize when re-theming, it is better to use the source components. It's what i do in eclipse, but if your using the flash ide they do tend to increase compile time by 3 or 4 seconds. In this setup DefaultStyles has to be present at all times, but the contents of the movieclip can be modified as you see fit. As far as graphical skin assets go, getting rid of them should save about 10K. However, if your compiling for flash 7 and you want to use a non-embedded system font as default, you can delete the embedded verdana pixelfont in the DefaultStyles movieclip (something that had to be present to allow masking of text in flash 6) and save about 18K. It all really depends on how desperate you are to save on filesize.

thanks!
I'm currently knee-deep in SMX skins and classes and I'm trying to make
them look not only different (I have managed that ;-), but also *good*
(or at least less ugly than what I have now).
Question: do I need to include the complete skin set (movieclip
"DefaultStyles"), even if I just use a handful components in my movie?
Or can I exclude some of the not needed skins from export?
Cheers,
Regina
