I'd *really* shy away from anything to do with FSCommand unless you're absolutely certain you're not going to be deploying on anything other than Windows and IE (and before Flash 8 player). But going back to 2001 when it was created, I can't imagine that there was any better solution.
As far as Flash-to-_javascript_ communication goes, FSCommand is a shrewd mistress, and an unpleasant crutch (imho). Now, with the Flash/JS Integration Kit and ExternalInterface post-Flash 8 -- you have a wealth of better options.

Look the resources here, now we are using the same code in our e-learning projects if they need scorm integration.
But all code is for Flash Player 7.0, no External interface is used by now.
