Cool! Thanks for checking out our project.

Well, in general anytime you need real-time communication in a push
type scenario such as chat, white boards, multi-user games or, if you
need to stream video then RTMP makes a lot of sense. Also, streaming
from a webcam or microphone to other users is another good application
of RTMP..

A major thing to keep in mind is that Red5 is not a port of FMS
(formally Flash Comm), so the same API and server side treatment isn't
just going to work. With that in mind though, we have set up the Red5
API to be very flexible and intuitive, allowing user to create
sophisticated applications with relative ease. See our video
conferencing application included with the installer as an example.

A PHP version of Red5 would be pretty tough to do, as there is no
Spring framework for PHP (AFIK), and certain libraries like MINA
simply don't exists, or are just not relavant to PHP. Anyway, we have
had some people on the Red5 list have success implementing RTMP with
PHP.

As Red5 becomes more stable we will certainly have options for hosting
available. There are already quite a few people interested in
providing general hosting for Red5.

Sure, I hope this helps. please sign up on our mailing list if you
have more questions and want to play around with what Red5 can do.
