I agree. (see the handful of other posts where I say the same thing including agreeing with scott). But the point is that no matter what, you will need some kind of API. An API is nothing more than a definition of how two different pieces of code interact. It provides an insulation that allows different coders to work together with a "contract" without understanding the detail of what each other are doing. Martin Schnabel (ASDT author) was excited about the idea for the specific reason is that it would insulate the parser author(s) from dealing with any other issues than parsing. He LIKED the idea of being insulated and dealing with a smaller problem. I am all for leveraging everything that eclipse does. I just think defining a modular architecture for this part of the project would make things go much more smoothly. These things are in no way mutually exclusive. In fact I would say they are barely related.
