If you're running on a server, you'd need PHP or similar. (But you've said 'serverless').
If it's running on a client machine, you need some sort of swf-to-exe wrapper. Essentially Flash would run inside an executable app, and would query that app for the filelist - then the app would return the results to your swf. I'd recommend SWHX: http://www.haxe.org/swhx. It's open source, will do what you want, and works on both Mac and PC. Or if you must, there are other solutions - mProjector or SWFStudio. I really can't recommend Zinc, I've had terrible trouble with it's lack of stability. But all those solutions aren't open source.
