Hello friends of the list

I want to set up a dedicated server to offer live audio and video streaming
in Peru.

My country is new to streaming media, for that reason the major
telecomunications companies does not offer any server products to fit my
needs. I am evaluating ThePlanet.com, LunarPages.com, Caronet.com and other
dedicated server solutions with fixed and unmetered bandwith.

My idea is to set up all with open source software, DSS and VLC or Red5 and
Flash or Icecast. We dont have problems using WM either, but price is an
important factor.

I need some feedback about commercial live audio and video streaming
implementations. In example: clasical user consumption of bandwith for a 100
user's radio, the behavior of video consumption (bandwith) in a webcast,
usual audience in a webcast event.. I know, theoricaly, all depends by the
project, but in real life there are an average behaviors and classical
problems.

Does anyone have that kind of experience and want to share?. Is open source
software a real alternative to commercial services in streaming, I mean
support costs, and fast problem recovery?, what are the clasical problems,
server side, in a live audio and video streaming, th best dedicated server's
companies etc...

I need all kind of informations please, it will be very usefull to me and to
develop streaming in Peru.

Thanks in advance,

Arturo Calle
