Quite interesting topic Marcelo... I think I have thought the same as you at least once a year for the past 6 or 7 years, however, I believe I have already chosen a "specialization" (as the physician) and I'm still working on it (as should a physician continously improve his/her skills). The IT world is humongous, yet, you have already narrowed it, let's say your skills focus on "application design/human interfaces/digital art" (I doubt you would like to write C code, low level code, electronic stuff, etc). Congrats, that's a begging...
How to improve your skill? I can only say this... do a lot of works (I concord with Sinisa here), after all, your are actually "creating" your specialization, there is not a degree as "Digital Art Director". Surely, you will find the path and create/improve the array of skills needed for your work (I believe you already know a lot of them). Again, talking about the physician, in my country at first year of medical school , you get to know several specilized areas of medicine every month so to learn a bit of every one. Still, you don't specialize untill after graduation. So, you (we) could do the same, taste a bit of everything, and start choosing what do you really want to specialize in. A way of doing this it's a great idea to create your own project (with deadlines) and make them reallity. As for myself, I believe I stand in the other side of the road, though I know the ways of Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc. I am not a "graphic designer" I just lack "creativity"... I took me many years to realize that (sadly). So I started to work coordinating teams of designers and coders, I know a bit of every plataform, every language, etc. but I wouldn't say I specialice in any of those fields. But I know what can be done, how it should be done, how to make designers comunicate with programmers and keep the clients happy, I believe that is my specialization and I'm still improving it. All in all, the phases Sinisa detailed are quite straightforward and summarize the result (I mean, once you achieved phase 3). I would just add that as you come across with different people, different professionals, etc. Let them know what you are best at, so they know who to call when in need, and do the same yourself about them. As a conclusion, let my say this... you said you like arts, designing, etc. So well, put that into "designing" your own specilization. :D best of luck, regards, Nicolas Gonzalez On Tue, May 20, 2008 at 7:53 PM, Sinisa Rudan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hmmm, > interesting post and also very close thinking to mine. > I've mastered computer sciences at aculty and I'm programming since 12 years > and in the same time paint, draw from even earlier years. > Then, later I've started designin printed and online contents etc. > > But my studies made me: GOD, I DON'T WANT TO BE JUST THE GUY SITTING IN FRON > OF COMPUTTER!!!!!! > I like my art side, I like to communicate with people in many fields. > > Then I was employed as guest teacher on the Faculty of applied Arts, > teaching designing guys art and scinece of Web design. > And I found myself sitting on both seats (art & science) and concentrated > myself more on freelance flash projects.
