Just to be fair, developers need to make money too. So, they sell the software they make. It's great that there are people who want to put their work out there for others to improve and use without paying anything. But, I don't think there is anything wrong with charging for your software. It just like any other profession. You don't always see a carpenter giving away free wood chairs, or a watch maker giving out free watches. It's good that people are charitable and generous but they have to make a living too :).
If money was absent in the equation, then you would have the barter system. It would still lead to the same result. I am not sure if a society that has everything for free can survive for long. You get everything you want, why work? Very few would even want to excel because their excelling at something won't have a direct impact on their lives (except some pats on the back).
