I have decided to hold be from reviewing/merging your changes till the
COLLADA DOM2.0 is out.

W.r.t relaxing the checking of file extensions, this is bad as in the
past the COLLADA dom would crash on some non COLLADA files. If you
have a specific extension in mind then it'd safer to just add this
into the COLLADA plugin.
