I've reviewed the changes, and while a lot more complex than the origin code that makes assumptions that the PagedLOD are created correctly, the changes look like they won't affect correct PagedLOD, while handling the more "freeform" usage that your models fit. Given that the changes look safe I've gone ahead and merged and submitted to SVN.
