The ffmpeg plugin provides video support under all platforms, but right now doesn't provide audio automatically like the quicktime plugin, so you need to add your own audio sync so it's not a drop in replacement yet. Even the QTKit under OSX isn't yet a perfect solution as it turns out even QTKit is just fully ported to 64bit, so ffmpeg remains the only solution of OSX and 64bit builds until Apple get their act together. I was hoping that the QTKit plugin would solve this issue right away, but for now it doesn't offer any more portability that the old quicktime plugin, it's just a bit cleaner and in theory future proofed so is a step in the right direction.
