The only way I've found to reproduce such a catastrophic failure is to

I believe I have the Python Image Library installed. At least apt-get
suggests I've got it already.
Can I do an specific command line tests to test PIL to make sure it's
being picked up correctly?
Not sure, but I'm investigating this. Tried to get the tests up on my OS X
system yesterday, but ran into a problem installing PIL with macports. I'll keep
working on it and let you know if I make any headway.
In the meantime... When a test fails, the test suite leaves the exported FLT
file, plus the before and after PNG image files. Could you take a look and see
if you have this output? Comparing the before and after images from each test
might give us a clue as to why the test suite is failing.
