I'm not as familiar with the loader code as I once was. It was originally
written by Brede, of course, and I haven't looked at it closely since I wrote
the exporter 4 or 5 years ago. I have no idea why it's using strings to parse
the palette record.
It seems to me that the std::string is just being used as a quick way to
allocate and zero out a buffer of length paletteSize. I don't know
enough about the inner workings of STL to know if this is a good idea or
not (apparently, it works well enough in practice).
Aside from that, there are only two places where the document's vertex
pool is referenced, and both places check for a NULL vertex pool before
attempting to access it. I can't find Nathan's patch either, but his
idea sounds like the thing to do to me.
