I downloaded and built this (last night from svn) If i do a ./ configure then make it fails because it cant find any of the gdal symbols. if i do static build everything works fine. Not sure why.
i did build a database using imagery and terrain from seamless.usgs.gov for phoenix area. it worked fine. i wonder if you are interested in a sample dataset for use with the package so that people can try it out. the 1/3" terrain and 0.25 meter imagery and since its from seamless it should be ok to post it on the osg site. if you are interested in hosting it, i can put together a data set from the site and a sample command line to build it with some screen dumps. If so what size is acceptable?
