I worked on a renderfarm management software in the past, and what I  
would do is read the stdout of the external process (in that case, a  
command-line renderer like Mental Ray or Maya/Lightwave's command-line  
renderers, in your case osgdem) and parse it. On a Unix variant, you  
can just open a pipe to the running process's stdout (IIRC), but on  
Windows I don't know how you'd do that.

Once that's done, you'd have to find tokens that allow you to deduce  
the progress and use that to give feedback. I can't really help you  
for that, as I don't know what kind of output osgdem produces...

So I guess I didn't really add to what you already knew, other than to  
say it can be done. :-)
