SOVERSION is not directly related to the VERSION. SOVERSION tracks the changes in the binary compatibility. If two versions are binary compatible then the SOVERSION will be the same. With the OSG its pretty rate for me not to make some check-ins each week that break binary compatibility so normally SOVERSION bumps up. When Paul and Bob get there planned 1.2.x, 2.0.x and 2.2.x etc binary compatible support releases made then the SOVERSION for each of these series will be identical.
