Peter, I'm not a modeler per se, but using either 3D Studio Max (3ds file format) or the Multigen-Paradigm (flt file format) tools would work well. OSG will allow you to import these popular file formats into OSG for rendering.

Also, when finished, the software will be offered for public download as part of the outreach program for this facility. The facility is non-profit and government funded and the release will be free of charge through its collaboration. From what I have read the OSG license supports this without royalty fees or restrictions, but I wanted to ask in case I have misinterpreted this.
