Robert, Gave your suggestions a shot, but wasn't met with any real success. The error log seemed to indicate much the same errors regardless of the changes. I'll keep playing with it - perhaps dig into some code or try something else I've not thought of yet.
I should note that the original problem involved both osg_ModelViewProjectionMatrix and gl_Vertex, suggesting the problem lay in both the uniform and vertex attribute bindings, though that could be misleading. Using the osg_Normal vertex attribute generated no error, as did osg_NormalMatrix (which, now that I think of it, I don't recall seeing it in the list of osg uniforms...)
