FlightGear also is totally reliant on AC3D, for better or worse. Personally I think it's a terrible format and would like to move to OBJ, but even if other contributors agreed with me (and they don't), we could only machine convert a portion of the models (many are authored and hosted externally to the project), so we would need a loader for some time. Of course we could maintain the loader locally inside FlightGear, but it sounds as if others are also using it. If maintenance work on the loader is necessary for future osg::Geometry changes, please let me know, since FG probably has the largest corpus of AC3D test data in existence at this point! - much of it generated by other tools besides AC3D itself, such as the blender export script or SketchUp exporter plugin (which I'm personally guilty of creating).
