Hi Srikanth, If you're just getting started with terrain you should also take a look at osgEarth (http://www.osgearth.org). You can use the GDAL driver to load the dem files or any other dataset that GDAL can read.
osgEarth creates a scene graph that is similar to VPB but instead of preprocessing the data into a scene graph up front osgEarth produces the scene graph dynamically from the source data.
