The OSG users this functionality hundreds of times per frame on most decent sized scens, so if it were broke we'd have heard about long long ago.
If we were to write a unit test, it will fail on our end. We are also surprised. If the community has tested this, it would be great to hear the results.
There is alot out the OSG's control w.r.t OpenGL state and how its managed at your end. This is also out my control, but in your control. I'd recommend using a debugger, or perhaps even tool for recording all OpenGL calls.
