FYI - "RPM hell" is a thing of past for most RPM-based distros for at least few years - Redhat has "yum", Suse uses "yast" and Mandriva has its own "urpmi/smart" package managers which will resolve the dependencies for you and are pretty much in the same league as Debian's apt. Installing a package boils down to either picking it out of a list or typing "urpmi x" (I am a Mandriva guy) - all the required libraries get downloaded and installed for you automatically. Gentoo is not bad neither, however you must realize that Gentoo works by compiling from sources (and not installing pre-built packages) and is more "hands-on" that most. It is certainly a good learning experience but not necessarily for everybody. I wouldn't suggest Gentoo as a first Linux for somebody who has no Linux/Unix experience unless they want to tackle the command line and the system guts head-on.
